[opensuse] architecture change using zypper
i have 32-bit oS 11.2 KDE 4.3.1 installed on a machine that can do 64-bit, and the performance is less than stellar i installed by downloading the 32-bit iso, burned it to DVD, and used it to boot/install (upgrading a 10.3 suse) i want to try with a 64-bit kernel, and with the newer KDE 4.3.4 now in STABLE, but i'm not sure how to get there from here when you download and burn the DVD from oS you get to choose between 32 and 64-bit, but looking at the repos i don't see a way to choose i had thought i could use zypper to remove repos, and add 64-bit repos, and perform a zypper dup to upgrade to 64-bit, but the repo URIs have no indication for architecture can i do this with zypper or do i have to upgrade using the 64- bit DVD? any help will be appreciated sc -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If I were you I would reinstall opensuse I am not sure even if it is possible to "upgrade" -=terry=- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Care to explain why you need a 32 bit OS in a 64 bit machine ? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

when i installed the 32-bit oS i wasn't sure the box was capable of 64-bits and i knew it would work with 32 -- i was trying to maximize the probability of having it work -- it does, but now i want it to work better -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Just for information, if your machine hadn't worked with 64bit, and you tried booting the 64 bit installer, it wouldn't even have started - there would have been no risk for installing a version that ran half-well.

I'm afraid you'll have to reinstall from scratch with the 64bit installation disc. An 'upgrade' from 32 to 64bit, while theoretically possible, is very likely to cause issues where you really have to know what you're doing to solve them. It's not something that is supported, or is ever likely to be supported, by an 'official' tool. So back up your data, download the 64bit installer, and do it that way Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Someone reported here success upgrading from 32 to 64 bits. I sugested he could document his procedure, but so far... I have no idea how he did it. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. He doesn't. He is asking how to upgrade to 64 bit. Me, however, I have a 64 bit machine with a 32 bit oS, and very happy with it. And I'm not going to explain why, already argued in the Spanish list many times, as you know. :-) - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
