where to find these packages? Novell website said they are part of 10.0 but not on my discs
Hello, I installed SuSE 10.0 with 5 CDROMs. Some packages were said to be part of SuSE 10.0 (by novell website), but are not found by using YAST. Example: gftp, bluefish try search Novell, gftp should be in /suse/i586/gftp-2.0.18.7.i568.rpm and bluefish also should exist. But I searched all 5 CDROMs, there are no such rpm. Or perhaps my 5 CDROM version is not complete? -- Zhang Weiwu Real Softservice International business: http://www.realss.com International sales: 0086 10 84606011 Inland business: http://www.realss.cn Inland sales call: 0086 592 2099987 Sent from Pine: http://www.washington.edu/pine/

Hi Zhang Weiwu, Nice to hear from you again! How is your dog? :-) There were too many packages to fit on the CD set. If you download the DVD .iso image, you will find all the packages there. I don't believe that 10.0 has ever been set up for direct ftp installation, so it isn't possible to download the individual packages. Another option would be to look for the packages you want at these sites: Suser-guru: http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/index.php Packman: http://packman.links2linux.com/ These are SUSE community members who provide rpms as a service to others in the community. I'm fairly certain the Guru has both gftp and bluefish available for 10.0. Take care and pet your dog for me! regards, Carl

Hi Zhang Weiwu,

Aooooh, a good surprise to me, you remember like a computer! My dog is fine, thank you. I think he is finer then I am;)

Thank you for the hint of getting a DVD, I'll try to download one to see if the files are more complete. But I am sure 10.0 is available for FTP installation, this is what I did for my colleague: 1) set up ftp server for anonymous access. 2) copy the content of CD1 to ftp server root, under CD1 folder; 3) copy the content of CD2 to ftp server root, under CD2 folder; 4) copy the content of CD3 to ftp server root, under CD3 folder; 5) copy the content of CD4 to ftp server root, under CD4 folder; 6) copy the content of CD5 to ftp server root, under CD5 folder; 7) tell the colleague to change install source to ftp, the path is /CD1/ 8) his yast install from ftp just fine. Yast is very smart to find the packages in ftp://server/CD2/ and ftp://server/CD3/ and all CDROM packages.
packages you want at these sites:
Suser-guru: http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/index.php

both are missing in packman, but guru seems to be a good source of a lot of packages, thank you for the info!

No more cable chewing, I hope?

My point was only that you will find 10.0 DVD and CD .iso images but not an FTP installation source at ftp.suse.com or on the mirrors.

You're welcome! They are both great resources. Packman provides a lot of multimedia libraries and programs (my favorite bundle is MPlayer + mplayerplugin + w32codec-all.) Guru provides a lot of development and systems administration tools. There are other community-maintained repositories but I have to update my list. Are you aware that Novell/SUSE Linux 10.1 has been released? It is noticably faster, at least on my circa 2001 hardware. You should have a test drive ;-) ... The download links and instructions are at: http://en.opensuse.org/Released_Version Note the "Documentation" link at the top of the left sidebar... very helpful info there! Take care and enjoy 10.1 if you decide to try it. And here is a virtual dog treat: x--x regards, Carl

Yes you will but it is not the boxed set version it is the oss version. You can find it here: http://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source/ and some non-oss packages here: http://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source-java/ You can find the ftp install iso here: http://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source/boot/ After the install you can add additional repos for other packages. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998

You can also add the below to Yast as sources for 10.0 RPMS. I think everything that is OSS and missing from the CDs is at one of the below. mirrors.kernel.org/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source-java mirrors.kernel.org/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source Of course you can use any mirror. Thanks for the correction, Greg. I'd forgotten about this exception.

Maybe I've overlooked something... wouldn't be the first time... but all of the mirrors I've checked don't seem to be carrying ftp installation sources... just the CD and DVD .iso images. I had, but then lost/deleted a snippet with the above links, so thanks for supplying them. Carl
