[opensuse] Filesystems support
OK, I get that the default filesystem has been switched from reiser to ext3. I just an average home user but I want to get the max freespace out of the partition. Is there any reason why I can't keep using the reiserfs ? (When I tried to use ext3 on the same partition, I lost about 5% freespace even with the use of the -m0 flag.) Also, I understand it's not being supported except for bug fixes. What are the plans for the future ? Reiser *3* is fully supported by openSUSE and will be for a long time. Reiser 4 is not supported by anybody so you can keep reiser 3 as long as you want. jdd -- http://www.dodin.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Who told you that it wasn't fully supported? it's still an option, and it's still supported, and there's no reason you can't keep using it. I still use reiser because it's the best performing journalled filesystem on linux for all the things I use it for. It's just reiser4 that's in doubt at this point. There will eventually be other good choices - ext4, btrfs etc. Joe -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Kind of.

Why not? Just use reiser. It simply is not the default. Not being the default doesn't mean in any way "not supported". It is supported the same as before.

Bugfixes is what the rest of the filesystems get, too. They are stable. Improvements go, for example, to ext4, not ext3, and they are not exactly compatible. What is doubtful is that reiserfs4 will finally see mainstream... but the version we have available, 3, is the same as before. It just works, it is fast, reliable, etc. Same as always. It is very good on certain aspects, etc. Other fs are better in other respects. Just choose the one that suits you for each use-case :-) - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
