Linux correlate of Windows' Ctrl-Alt-Del
Sometimes Linux appears to come unstuck. In windows, I used to use Ctrl-Alt-Del to try to expunge offending applications. I know there must be a linux correlate of this for similar emergencies. Perhaps there are several. Can anyone enlighten me. I know about the Process Management tool, but what if nothing responds to a mouse click. What should I try before hitting the restart button. I have SuSE 7.1 Thank you. -- Dan
In an emergency CTRL+ALT+F1 gives you a terminal from which CTRL+ALT+DELETE will halt or reboot - I can't remember which because I've never had occasion to use them. JDL On Mon, 19 Mar 2001, Dan The Man wrote:

Bring up a terminal and su to root, then do a ps -e ps -e will show you all the process that are running and you can issue a kill to the number associated with the process. If X has frozen its probably best to ctrl-alt-F1 to a terminal screen and do it from there. Matt On Mon, 19 Mar 2001, Dan The Man wrote:

Erm, What did I write? Thats pretty offensive to suggest I wrote that particuler drivel. In fact I am running 7.1 and bought the Pro version, so I wouldn't mind an apology, especially as I never even wrote that rubbish. If you pointed to rubbish I may have written then it would be a different story. In fact it was written by someone who styled himself "jason" and his e-mail was not even real. So please, do not come on this list and slander people. Are you a reporter by any chance? Matt On Mon, 19 Mar 2001, julo wrote:

The story at the URL whines that SuSE is not going to release a freebie this time. I don't know why they should. How are they going to make enough money to stay in business if they give away the work that they have to pay their programmers for? I would prefer to have a single distro for a price somewhere between the Professional and the home office version, or whatever it's called, with the books, but I suppose I can live with the present situation. For now. I am grateful for the books. Some other distros havew nothing useful available. At 18:34 03/19/2001 -0500, you wrote:

And he is wrong - of course the ftp version will be available RSN.

Well, that might be true, but does not seem to be very well accepted in the Linux community. People are so used to getting everything for free, that there will always be an uproar, as soon as there is payment required. I just don't want to know, how much heat Red Hat is receiving since they started charging for their update services.

Yeah, but that is a little different too. Apparently, they are charging for access to their Red Hat Network. That is their upgrade (bug and security fix) mechanism. So now, if you want to apply all the security patches in an easy convenient way, you have to pay $9.95USD per month. - v -- Victor R. Thank you gentlemen. Dan The Man has carefully noted all suggestions in preparation for an emergency. Thank you. -- Dan On Monday 19 March 2001 21:44, Dan The Man wrote:
