Hello All, I've been trying to get this to work all night, with very nasty results. Today I got DSL installed at home, and my previous setup was my Linux box (SuSE 6.3) serving as a dial-up gateway for the LAN (this NT machine where I'm writting this email at, and a BeOS box). I thought, no sweat. I have two NICs installed as: eth0 ip: 200.213.112.4 net: 255.255.255.0 gw: 200.213.112.1 and eth1 ip: 192.168.194.1 net: 255.255.255.0 What do you know? When the RJ-45 jack is connected to eth0, I can ping the gateway, and my boxen can ping eth0. I can ping my hosts, and I can ping the gateway. When I try pinging anything else (like the ISP's DNS) I get a "Network is unreachable"!?! At first, I thought my DSL provider might be broken, but as it turns out, I changed the NT boxes config and plugged the cat-5 cable into it. Voila! Everything works perfectly. I cannot beleive that there would be some sort of incompatibility between the DSL and my Linux box. The only setup difference that I can perceive (TCP/IP wise) is that one of the boxes has 1 NIC and the other has 2. Maybe there's something I need to change from my eth1->ppp0 gateway to a eth1->eth0 setup?? I've been using yast for everything. Has anyone had trouble with a similar setup? I don't know that this is the problem, but you might ask your ISP if they require you to be running PPP-over-Ethernet. This is a fairly common arrangement that supposedly enhances security, although if you have a decent firewall you don't need it and if you don't it will probably delay the hacking of your system by a good 15 seconds. PPPoE software *is* on the SuSE 6.3 boxed set. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Hello, John. What hardware are you using to connect to the DSL line with ? Is it an external DSL Router, like the Cisco 675 ? Or do you have an internal card ? If you have the external router, with the phone line and ethernet interfaces, I don't think you need to worry about PPPoE, as the router deals with all that. However, if you have a more bridge like device, then the PPPoE idea from Don might be right on the money. You also need to set up the routing table on the Linux box so that it knows which interface to use to route to which network. You should create entries for both NICs so that you have reciprocal routes. Also tell it to use the external interface by default. It will know to use 192.168.x.y for traffic on that network, and will then try to get to the outside world for any other requests. Best of luck, Stuart.
