[opensuse] Can not login as an user but root
Hi, I use opensuse-10.2. After upgrading kernel-default-2.6.18.8-0.5 to kernel-default-2.6.18.8-0.7 - 0.7 is latest, I can not login as an user account in both KDE/Gnome. Only root account can login. When login as user, white window comes. it looks like frozen. I tried and figure it out below: 1. this trouble does not depend desktop environment: I tried KDE and Gnome. Both have same trouble. In KDE, initial window comes, but when clicking start menu, it opens white window. I can move mouse but nothing is activated. In Gnome, no initial window comes, but all the white display. 2. this trouble happens after kernel-default-2.6.18.8-0.7, I could login as user until kernel-2.6.18.8-0.5. 3. this trouble does not depend monitor driver: I tried dell flat panel monitor and panasonic monitor too. 4. I created new user account after upgrading but not fixed. Above symptom I guess this trouble depends on kernel version or x11 version with this latest kernel. Does someone know the same trouble or how to fix it? Yes, I can login in an ordinary terminal as I can only login as root. I can not login as an ordinary user. When I login as an ordinary user, system will freeze as I explain 1. below. Do you know how to DEGRADE from kernel-default-2.6.18.8.-0.7 to kernel-default-2.6.18.8.-0.5.? Rikard Johnels wrote:

just to be clear, as root, if you go to runlevel 3 using 'init 3' the system still freezes if you log in as a user? can you get to a virtual terminal when the current terminal freezes? you said you created a new user. how? did you try using adduser (or is it useradd? i forget which) in runlevel 3? if you can su into a new user account at runlevel 3, can you use startx to get a gui as that user? was the kernel the ONLY thing you updated? --- shigeru serizawa <serizawakic@h7.dion.ne.jp> wrote:

Maybe the password for the ordinary user isn't what you think it is. TRY THIS: As root, you can change the password of any user, like this: # passwd userabc New Password: Reenter New Password: Password changed. # Now userabc has a new password.
When I login as an ordinary user, system will freeze as I explain 1. below.

have you tried creating a new account for your user and logging into that? If you can create a new account and log in with no trouble, then it's a permissions problem in your users' home directory. - -- Mark "Drunkenness is not an excuse for stupidity. If you open up a console terminal and then run the command su, then give it the password for root, does it succeed like this: akulkis@kulkix:~> su Password: kulkix:/home/akulkis # Or does it fail like this: akulkis@kulkix:~> su Password: su: incorrect password akulkis@kulkix:~> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
