Not sure why sound is out. Sound works in test user and other os. Without moving all dot directories and dot files I am not sure where to look. I tried moving .gconf .gconfd .gnome2 and .gnome2_private still no sound. it also messed up evolution. I have checked the online suse references apparently no one documented a sudden sound loss.

So which dot file or dot directory is the culprit?

Maybe none, back then you may have still needed your users in the "Audio" group the way this is done has changed multiple times and I don't remember which would have been correct for 11.4 but the one we use now certainly didn't exist yet.

Evolution was not open at the time so could not have changed the sound. I did it the clumsy way I moved all dot files and directories not related to evolution. Sound returned but I still do not know which one is responsible. So Ill restore them one at a time to test which caused the sound outage.
