Yast 2 sucks ... and still !!
sorry for lack of info ! Is is a clean instalation, thanks to all warnings in this list ! and there are ANY kind of graphical interface !! I'll never install XFree in a gateway/firewall, its waste of resources and unecessary "possible" security holes . I do all administration tasks remotly via SSH . Why migrating to 8.0 ? Because the dealer of Suse warning me that 7.3 will be discontinued soon !! All right, I can still using "my" 7.3 to install in all my actual and furure clients, but I'll trying to be correct !! In this way, I'll trying to get one copy to each client ! I'm not talking about "upgades", I'm talking about new instalations in new clients in new ( or relocated ) machines ! Why use more powerfull hardware ? Because for gateways/firewalls a Pentium with 64 of RAM is MUCH MORE than enough hardware !! Why don't use the Suse Firewall on a CD ? Because I'm in Brasil !! Third world with all the rest of the "first" world in crisis , anyone here can afford U$1000,00 just to build a simple gateway/firewall !!! A hardware based gateway/firewall ( like Linksys,Dlink ) is about U$100,00 here !! To a complete corporate file/email server maybe, but NOT for this ! Like someone in the list told me, I DON'T have time to compile kernels or make a "tweeking" time waste config . My position stands ! If I need to make evething by hand, I'll use Slackware/Debian ! If I want a linuxconf "RedHat" like I'll use Brasilian Conectiva ! The main reason that I migrate to Suse is your "former" friendly and fast config tool Yast ONE !!!!!! If Ssue no longer have this, and don't have a similar ( in speed and friendlyship, not just features !!! ) tool, I'll go awy !! And beleave me , I am influenced a lot of peaple around me to use Suse, and i CAN make the oposite .... Suse can be reaching a lot of new clients with 8.0, but can be loosing a lot of old clients too ! Suse can afford it ??? Fábio Rabelo

No it won't. It won't be discontinued b/f 2 years. And why all the !'s in your mail? -- Mads Martin Jørgensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort?" -- A. P. J.

I think the confusion is over support versus sales. SuSE will surely release several versions over the coming two years. But as each version is released, they obviously stop selling the previous one, leading to the dealer's comment. -- David Benfell, LCP benfell@parts-unknown.org --- Resume available at http://www.parts-unknown.org/resume.html

There are other solutions for firewalls/gateways. Depending on your needs, Smoothwall provides a simple, free, downloadable, Linux based firewall that runs nicely on an old 486. I have been using Smoothwall at home, and in a business network for quite a while now without a single problem. Beats the troubles I was having trying to adapt SuSE 7.x to the task... took me 15 minutes to set up, and I can remotely admin the business one from home via ssh or a web browser. C.

If all you want is a firewall, I would recommend IPCop (http://ipcop.sourceforge.net). It is much smaller than SuSE, installs very quickly, and requires minimal configuration effort. Once you're familiar with the interface (you seem to be saying that you are installing lots of firewall systems for clients), a 10-minute install from inserting the CD to a fully-functional system is perfectly feasible. Admin is via a web (http or https) interface, but it also supports SSH, so you could encrypt the http connection over an SSH connection if you prefer. -- David Smith | Tel: +44 (0)1454 462380 Home: +44 (0)1454 616963 STMicroelectronics | Fax: +44 (0)1454 617910 Mobile: +44 (0)7932 642724 1000 Aztec West | TINA: 065 2380 GPG Key: 0xF13192F2 Almondsbury | Work Email: Dave.Smith@st.com BRISTOL, BS32 4SQ | Home Email: David.Smith@ds-electronics.co.uk
