hi friends i am running suse 6.3 distro. problem is i dont have sound running and i am not able to install general "RPM's". some error like mahesh:/mnt/pcqlinux/RedHat/RPMS # rpm -ivh sm56* only packages with major numbers <= 3 are supported by this version of RPM error: sm56-85.1-10.i386.rpm cannot be installed mahesh:/mnt/pcqlinux/RedHat/RPMS # comes when i try to install packages from "RPM format" .what is the problem?i had gone to the website and tried searching for supprt. it said that i had to update the rpm manager if wanted to install general rpm's but when i tried to download them, it give's me "page connot be displayed" error message. i found those error links to be http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/ke_rpm-suse51.html and http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/ke_update-rpm.html found on pages at http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/pakete_manuell.html and http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/ke_rpm.html repectively. please help me maheshwark

it works now. i am running an i810 chipset motherboard. will sound work on
it?distro being suse6.3? also which version of alsa should i install,i have
the latest one which needs kernel-2.4.3. can i do something like this?
i have mandrake and redhat running on kernel-2.4.3. can i copy the
/usr/src/linux-2.4.3(in mandrake and redhat) directory to my suse linux's
/usr/src directory and then compile it ? will it work properly?

It depends on which audio chipset your motherboard manufacturer used. Just because it's an i810 does not mean it uses the Intel audio codec.

Probably. I'd personally rather get a clean tarball. You also need some updated tools like modutils to handle the 2.4 series kernel.
