[opensuse] The Missing SUSE manual: Missing documentation?
I'm stumped. I've tried to figure out what package it might be in, but a couple of times I've gone to read the /usr/share/doc/manual/ and tried the opensuse-manual_en-pdf dir for the "pdf". But the only thing in the directory is a LICENSE.txt file: Copyright © 2006-2009 Novell, Inc. Permission is granted to copy, distribute and/or modify this document under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 .... SUSE®, openSUSE®, the openSUSE® logo, Novell®, the Novell® logo, the N® logo, are registered ... blah blah blah ------------------------ The Copyright is current up to 2009 and openSUSE is mentioned, but no pdf on my distro. I've looked through my index of files of all rpms, but can't seem to find it. Anyone know what package the pdf is in? Thanks, -linda -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks, -linda Hi The way I understand if from the change log;

That's just lame! Why bother to install an empty directory? The package is installed, and contains nothing? If someone installs the package, it doesn't make sense to not install the contents of the package. The total contents of the package: /usr/share/doc/manual /usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en-pdf /usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en-pdf/LICENSE.txt What's the point of installing an empty package? That just seems really broken. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The total contents of the package: /usr/share/doc/manual /usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en-pdf /usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en-pdf/LICENSE.txt
The 11.0 package contains: /usr/share/doc/manual /usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en-pdf /usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en-pdf/APPARMOR-admin_en.pdf /usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en-pdf/opensuse-gnomequick_en.pdf /usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en-pdf/opensuse-kdequick_en.pdf /usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en-pdf/opensuse-reference_en.pdf /usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en-pdf/opensuse-startup_en.pdf I haven't checked 11.2.
What's the point of installing an empty package?
None.
That just seems really broken.

Looks like you hit https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=481926 too. The initial report was for openSUSE 11.1 and is still valid for 11.2. But see Karl's comment #4. Is there really no open source alternative to PDF files? Maybe whatever the heck Scribus uses? Or at least .war files (tarred web pages as saved by Konqueror)? Sure, these are KDE... but I don't use Gnome. Maybe TeX files? Help me out here, people. By the way, do the current versions of the distro still come with an RPM of HOWTO files? By default the documentation is available as in the HTML format. PDF is optional. Lars -- Lars Müller [ˈlaː(r)z ˈmʏlɐ] Samba Team SUSE Linux, Maxfeldstraße 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany

Okay, I completely misunderstood what was being said. The title of the thread says "missing documentation" and I thought it was gone period. Kind of wondered about HTML. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

PDF is currently an open format - I don't know exactly what type or degree of open, but it is open. You don't need to use acrobat to read it, nor to generate pdfs (with some practical limitations). And, there is no open format that can compete with PDF (with a similar feature set), for practical purposes: it is very widely known and supported, on probably every operating system. That is important.
By the way, do the current versions of the distro still come with an RPM of HOWTO files? I don't even remember if my current 11.0 did.
At least 11.0 does. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I know, but I misunderstood the original issue (see my other reply on this). Still, if there was an open format that we could use, it would make sense to provide the documentation in the distro with it if the library for it was installed by default. That's what I meant. Anyway, neither here nor there. I'll just stumble confusedly off at this point. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes, that would be nice. However... the goal of any documentation reader is to be able to read always, regardless of what computer you have available, or the operating system. The fact is that PDF fulfills that role... a windows user could not read the docs (before installing linux, perhaps) if we used, say, dvi or tex. They are not so popular formats. We could invent some beter format than pdf, sure... but the problem is being able to read it anywhwere. The market has choosen a de-facto standard, which is PDF... so we'd better use it, even if it is not the best one.
Anyway, neither here nor there. I'll just stumble confusedly off at this point.
A good documentation format is something that interests me a lot. I don't fully "love" pdf, but it is what we have... as always with technical choices, it is a compromise. I think there are some other formats used on book readers, but I understand they are even more closed, DRM et al... - -- Cheers, Carlos E. This is a pretty intriguing package. I installed it while casting around for something to read some purchased electronic books from amazon and Barnes an Nobel. By and large it worked very well as a reader of all the formats it supports. The ability to download news papers is one of the best implementations I have ever seen. Conversion from one format to another is still a bit shaky, often failing for no obvious reason with no diagnostics at all. I hope future versions will be able to upload to some of the more popular services (Amazon, B&N) which allow you to upload your books to your private bookshelf on these services for download to their reader devices. Note I used the Ubuntu version, as I did this before 11.2 came out. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
