[opensuse] Please help with what is next step on bug report ?
I filed bug 949796 on bugzilla. When I check the status it claims it is resolved and a duplication of bug 949796. That bug is listed as "in_progress". But that bug was reported October of 2015, three months ago. How long does it take to get make the system bootable? I would think this would be a high priority problem, and don't understand the delay. There appears to be no workaround, so what should I do? I have tried experimenting with some different options to grub, but without digging into the details I cannot determine what changed between 13.2 and 42.1. I have written numerous emails to Josef Reidinger, but I assume he is really saturated. The one response I received from Josef was "to change the default mount method in partitioner to something else like UUID or label". But I do not know how to do this on a system that I am trying to upgrade, where you do not get to play with the partitioner. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have installed al of the maintenance updates, and my system still will not boot. I was always curious if my problem was really a duplication. I am trying a new install, using device name rather than UUID to see if there is any change. I am just guessing at solutions now. But that info is only helpful if you also tell him HOW to apply the patched sg3_utils during a fresh install or, more accurately, after a botched upgrade caused by the bug that left him with a dead system. If he's using the iso/dvd it's static, the patched sg3_utils isn't on there. So where-when-how does he feed it into the install/upgrade process? Do an install from the NET media Or add online repositories as part of the installation - It's the second screen you see on the installation, with 'Installation Options' on the title, after the Welcome screen, before the Partitioner. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Er... no. You reported "Bug 963247", and they told you that it is the same issue as in (ie, duplicate of) "Bug 949796". Also, please notice that the fact that a bugzilla is closed as solved is not the same as saying that the problem affecting you is solved. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Sorry for the screw up in numbers. You are correct. But my question still stands, what do I do next? I am trying to build a new system, specifying in the partition manager that I wanted to use device names rather than UUIDs. But when I examine the fstab, the swap and home partition are listed by device name, but the system partition is still listed by UUID:-( I don't know enough of the internals any more to understand what broke here. If you have any thoughts please let me know. Enough for today:-) Don -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

If you partition and format prior to beginning installation, you can set whatever UUIDs and LABELS you please. Then during installation, you specify by label for each individual partition you select for mounting, and by-label will be used by the new fstab. If yo have a problem with the label for the swap, just specify no swap during installation, and add it to fstab after installation is otherwise complete. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." If by "device name" you mean like "/dev/sda1", its usage is deprecated, so it is possible that the installer doesn't use them intentionally. You should choose one of id, uuid, label, etc. Have a look at "/dev/disk/" to check the possibilities. That said, once the installer is done, you can write whatever mode you prefer. But if you choose device names, it is possible that the installer refuses to upgrade next time. YaST did so in the past, that I'm sure. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. install device is: /dev/disk/by-uuid/36e05b70-bcf4-488f-7700924edb92 Number may not be correct. I have made errors copying from one screen to another before. Don -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

And in /boot/grub2/device.map? The missing /dev/disk/by-id/wwn-XXX must come from somewhere. You could also check /boot/grub/device.map to be sure. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
