Well, then use RPM! You can install the source RPM of the previous version and modifiy the spec-File to use the new source tgz. Now rebuild the package and install the new RPM afterwards. Most of the time, there's not much more to do than changing the release number of the source package. There is an article in our SDB, which covers this issue:
