I have recently installed 7.2 Now KDE2 takes *much* longer to start up after than it did on 7.1 .. I mean a real long time. Anyone else experiencing this or have a clue as to why ? Suse "support" refuses to answer questions about KDE. Thanks for any help ! Cliff

What's your configuration (processor, RAM, etc.)? I've got a PIII-667 with 512Mb running 7.2 and it takes waaaay too long for my liking, but my wife likes it. It seems that each new version of KDE starts more and more background services on startup. Not sure why this is, but I'm guessing that it may have something to do with the slowness. I'm pretty sure that some of these services remain up but idle after KDE is closed, so ensuing startups should be a bit quicker....but don't quote me on that ;^) I can't offer much more than that since I'm a die-hard Enlightenment fan.. I use a humble 166 MHz Vectra with 160MB memory. Under 7.1 it took a minute or so to logon KDE2 Now it takes 5 or more minutes. Yes observing 'top" shows it is starting all sorts of (uneccesary) processes such as "knotify" (which I do not use) etc. etc. Maybe I should try "enlightenment" .. ! But that is not the biggest problem, 7.2 is so full of bugs I cannot believe it has been released. I counted 10 in the first few hours of use some of which are quite serious... I will not be installing it anywhere else. Cliff

Please tell us what it is, instead of just saying "there's bugs". -- Mads Martin Jørgensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort." -- A. P. J.

On my system, after a straight upgrade from 7.1 to 7.2 - Text mode yast2 hangs - Apache "tomcat" module has a configuration error making apache fail to start - KDE2 gets into a state after a while where it fails to be able to launch anything - Using KDE2 sound stops working after a while - KDM2 selects kde2 whatever window manager you ask for - My Epson740 printer, which worked perfectly in 7.1 no longer works after the upgrade - "esd" won;t start without fiddling around with it's FIFO - The setting for default window manager in rc.config is ignored - Starting KDE is orders of magnitude slower than under 7.1 - Starting programs under KDE as normal user, that require the entry of the root password silently fail to run the program concerned. - and a few others I have forgotten.. I have reported several of them; installation support refused help with the KDE problems despite my pointing out that support is supposed to be available for X11/GUI.. X11 is not a GUI, KDE is, and Suse are big promoters of KDE, so I find this strange. Anyway... The only one of these problems I had in 7.1 was the KDM one, which has been there since 7.0. Now, I guess a lot of people will say "I don;t have any of those problems..*sigh*". Well I do. So maybe the upgrade process cocked up on my particular (very ordinary) configuration. Cliff

Post them, and we all may learn something! M

I've noticed no discernable difference between SuSE 7.1 and 7.2. I have a modest (by today's standards) BX PII 500 system with 384MB - guess we're looking at 10-15 seconds after logging in. Want to try Windows 2000 Pro?

Hope you reported them so they can get fixed. I must say that 7.2 is by far the most complete version to date and was worth the upgrade. Anyone want my old 6.1 and 6.4 box sets? M
