Thanks, I'll try all suggestions made (yours and Joe's). Also got rid of the apm in my kernel for doing the console blanking (not graphical). I'll know in a few hours if all this helps. I just hope it isn't the dpms stuff, a 17" monitor uses a lot of energy.

If you are running kde2, use control center>power control>energy and uncheck "enable display energy saving".
Otherwise, if you are running X4.x.x, check /etc/X11/XFConfig, in Section "Monitor" for Option "dpms"
AND Section "ServerLayout" for
Option "BlankTime" Option "StandbyTime" and Option "OffTime".
