After upgrades from SuSE7.1pro base, kde starts up *very* slowly, whether or not it tries to restore previous desktop -- up to 30 seconds until progress box disappears. A new window takes about 1 sec. This is on an unloaded 2@400mhz all-scsi computer, w/ linux4.2.2 and SVGA server. And, by the way, in kde2.1, many apps (e.g., xosview, emacs) do not get restored; but with same settings they did in 2.0. Any ideas? jim bennett jbennett@syr.edu

Myself and a few other posters on this list have found that removing the .kde2 dir (after suitable backup of course) removal of the SuSE KDE2 rpm's and a fresh install of KDE 2.1.1 either from SuSE or kde.org (or mirrors) seemed to solve most of the problems. At least it did at this end after three failed attempts. Im not sure why but Im supposing that some of the SuSE custmizations are not necessarily 100% compatible with the latest KDE release, which by the way, also includes an upgrade of the required QT libs. Bad cable? broken scanner? bad software installation? ineffable mystery? When attempting to scan with HP 6270A, light bar seems to hang up. xsane gives this error: "Error during read: "Error during device I/O" with /var/log/messages Mar 7 15:41:55 fmsb7 kernel: scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 0, scsi1, channel 0, id 3, lun 0 Read (6) 00 00 80 00 00 Mar 7 15:41:55 fmsb7 kernel: scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 0, scsi1, channel 0, id 3, lun 0 Read (6) 00 00 80 00 00 Mar 7 15:41:56 fmsb7 kernel: SCSI host 1 abort (pid 0) timed out - resetting Mar 7 15:41:56 fmsb7 kernel: SCSI bus is being reset for host 1 channel 0. but permissions are OK, and sgcheck shows: 8 root% sgcheck Assignment of generic SCSI devices, device host/channel/ID/LUN type(numeric type) vendor model: ... /dev/sg4 1/0/3/0 Processor HP C6270A ... Is there a software solution to determine if cable is the problem? I can't connect scanner hd50 scsi-2 adapter directly to computer hd68 scsi-3. jim bennett jbennett@syr.edu
