Re: [S.u.S.E. Linux] Linux and the Palm Pilot.
To Donnie (and all Piloteers),
Using Linux on the Pilot is a waste for folks who want a PDA. If you have a *need* for an ultra-tiny *Linux* box for some reason (and if you had that reason you'd know it), then it's interesting. Otherwise, PalmOS is open enough that you can develop for it and it is VERY good as a PDA OS.
Yes the palm can be sinked to Linux. Kde even has a small program (not tested yet) Kpilot, there is a samll but fucntional developers kit, and an emulator xcopilot (bugger to set up though).
Hmm. I guess my best bet is sticking, for the initial break-in period at least, with the Pilot OS and Kpilot. A question. Would Kpilot be *the only Linux software* I'd need to sync the Pilot with my S.u.S.E. box? In other words, once I've RMP -i'd the Kpilot RPM, I shouldn't need to do anything else, right? In any event, I won't be able to use Kpilot until December, since it's glibc, I suppose. -- Glenn -- - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Glenn, you will also want to get the command-line pilot tools. I use Kpilot and love it, but each synch with it is a full backup, not just a standard PIM synch. On my 2mb pilot it takes a log time and a lot of battery juice to do a full backup. The command-line tools are great if all you want to do is install an app, or back-up something specific. I recommend getting both. Someone also just released a java based desktop tool set for the PalmPilot. It will run on any platform but is not yet fully functional (but close). You can see it by going to www.pilotgear.com and looking at the last 7 days of new apps. You will find it somewhere in the list. There is a link to the developers home-page with more info. Linux and my PalmPilot work great together. I highly recomend the combination. : ) -Ben ps - please forgive the fact that this mail was sent from a M$ platform (I'm at work) - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
