[opensuse] hostname
Arrgh! I've done it again (at least the 3rd time in the last few years!). Installed 11.3 early this week and didn't notice any option to set the host name. So yast put in a random string (linux-zc8d). Digging through the manuals, I find a command "hostname" that will change the hostname in /etc/HOSTNAME. I do that, and everything looks nice -- if I open another bash session, it gives me my preferred name. But now I find that the network name is still linux-zc8d. Further, when I try to fix it using yast, it says I can't because NetworkManager is in control. I can't find a way to fix it using NetworkManager or knetworkmanager. Finally, I tried rebooting to see if the other services would pick up the new hostname from /etc/HOSTNAME. Nope; /etc/HOSTNAME now contains linux-zc8d. Sorry to screw this up again, but I need help again. How can I fix my hostname? Yast-> Network Devices -> Network Settings -> Tab Hostname/DNS (also bumped into it more than once :-( ) Regards -- Mark Goldstein -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

And there is a motivation behind this. Ask the person installing a system as less as possible to make the install workflow as easy and smooth as possible. It's still possible to define the name of the system while install. It's even there part of the network settings as Mark wrote. Didn't work. First try: -- Yast-> Network Devices -> Network Settings -> Tab Hostname/DNS Same old "can't do anything because Network Manager is running". So, -- Yast-> Network Devices -> Network Settings -> Tab "Global Options"; click "Traditional method with ifup". -- Yast-> Network Devices -> Network Settings -> Tab Hostname/DNS Now, every time I try to do anything (change tab, click "ok", etc.) I get a popup saying "invalid hostname" -- it's blanked the name I just put in! So, click "Change hostname via DHCP". Now it forces my name to "linux". --Nope; second time I tried this, "embelex" stuck. Wait for suseconfig (is that what's writing all the config files?). Now try unchecking "Change hostname via DHCP" (since it was originally unchecked, I assume it shouldn't have been?). Wait for suseconfig. Looks good. -- Yast-> Network Devices -> Network Settings -> Tab "Global Options"; click "User controlled with NetworkManager". Wait for suseconfig. NetworkManager crashes with a segfault. Popup says crash information is "probably not useful". Oh, well. A new bash session says john@embelex. Try rebooting (yeah, I know, we've been through this discussion before, and I still prefer to reboot rather than try to figure out all the obscure services that might trip me up if I don't). I'll let you know if I have any success when my machine comes up again. if it'll still let me on my network :-(. jp -- Seems to have worked. New bash sessions give my correct hostname, and my router says "embelex" is connected. Thanks, guys. jp -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

@John: Please pass your experience into a bug report. Ok, Lars, it's done, 624923. While I was at it, found a bug in http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Submitting_bug_reports The 11.3 link actually points to the 11.2 bugzilla. I had to go the the "searching for bugs" section and find a way from there to report the bug. Rajko? Fixed :) The Factory is now set to 11.4, but 11.4 version is not yet in the bugzilla, so right now it will give you general bug reporting screen. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I've asked our admins to setup 11.4 in bugzilla - and added this to the checklist for the next release: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Launch_Checklist Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, Program Manager openSUSE, aj@{novell.com,opensuse.org} Twitter: jaegerandi | Identica: jaegerandi SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126
