I'm using 7.2 on an Athlon 1GHz, and I've had no problems whatever with the k_deflt kernel. It is compiled with pentium instructions. Perhaps if I recompiled with Athlon-specific instructions I could gain something, but I figure if the gain was that big, there'd be more recommendations out there to do it. As it is, it's hardly mentioned, so I won't bother. You certainly don't *have* to recompile, since Athlon is completly pentium compatible. I was downloading it. I was almost done after two hours (!!! I have 10Mbit straight to the net. I downloaded openoffice two days ago and got an average of over 900 megabytes per second) when X went ballistic, took ALL my memory + swap (that's 1 gig), 100% cpu and crashed.
