He's right. You might need to recompile the kernel esp if it was compiled to target the Intel processor. Clifford Okoro Hope is a dangerous thing, it spreads disillusion. ===== Original Message From Terrance Eck <tleck@mindspring.com> ===== I'm thinking about updating my computer. Currently running SuSE 7.2 on a Pentium II Asus PB2 system. The new system will be Gigabyte GA 7DXR with an AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.4G chip. I will move the hard drive to the new system and hopefully it will boot. Will this work or do I have to reinstall SuSE?
Thanks, Terry

If someone is using an Athlon CPU and installs SuSE 7.2 do they have any problems? Would they have to recompile the kernel? If I install SuSE 7.2 on a Pentium II do I use (by default) a different kernel then if I install on an Athlon? I don't think so, any comments? Terry Clifford Okoro wrote:

I'm using 7.2 on an Athlon 1GHz, and I've had no problems whatever with the k_deflt kernel. It is compiled with pentium instructions. Perhaps if I recompiled with Athlon-specific instructions I could gain something, but I figure if the gain was that big, there'd be more recommendations out there to do it. As it is, it's hardly mentioned, so I won't bother. You certainly don't *have* to recompile, since Athlon is completly pentium compatible. I mean, when was the last time you recompiled windows in order to change a CPU? :) regards Anders On Tuesday 02 October 2001 03.46, Terrance Eck wrote:

I was downloading it. I was almost done after two hours (!!! I have 10Mbit straight to the net. I downloaded openoffice two days ago and got an average of over 900 megabytes per second) when X went ballistic, took ALL my memory + swap (that's 1 gig), 100% cpu and crashed. Now when I try to login sun.com says my password is wrong! Aaargh! :) Anders On Wednesday 03 October 2001 01.54, W.D.McKinney wrote:

Terry I have suse 7.2 running on a duron 850 an also an athlon 1.4. No troubles. both works out of the box with the standard kernel from suse. Both run nice an fast. Going to be using the athlon at work for a replacement for our old old old novell 3.2 server soon.

I ran 7.2 Prof "out-of-the-box" until I felt confortable with it and then compiled for my Athlon. I have read that you need gcc 3.x to fully utilise the Athlon T-Birds - any comments on this anyone??
