[opensuse] Suse 11 with Firefox or Windows XP with Firefox concerning security
Hi, Could somebody explain me if Suse 11 with Firefox is safer/how much safer than Microsoft Windows XP with Firefox as a browser. Kann mir jemand erklaeren wieweit Suse mit Firefox sicherer ist zu Microsoft XP mit Firefox als Browser. I have to decide if I choose Suse 11 with Firefox or Windows XP with Firefox for the next computer. Ich muss entscheiden ob ich Suse nehmen soll bei der naechsten Installation. Am I with Suse 11 safer in using e.g. internet banking regularly concerning viruses, ...? Bin ich mit Suse und Firefox wirklich sicherer was zB Internetbanking... angeht vor Viren, Trojanern.... oder ist die Sicherheit nicht allzu unterschiedlich? How is it with Opera and Suse 11 in comparison with Firefox 3 and Suse 11 Wie weit steht es mit Suse und Opera im Vergleich zu Suse mit Firefox? Thanks Danke Franz Preihs -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

In general you are safer with linux. Of course people on this list prefer openSUSE. Windows (any version) is more prone to hacking/viruses then linux. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

In general you are VASTLY safer with Linux.
There. fixed it for you.

I think that one of the main reasons that linux is safer is simpley that so far it has not received as much attention as windoze. One other aspect is that microshaft release details of inadequacies before they are fixed. Unfortunately all os's can have exploits that are available to the very knowledgeable. Much depends on how the system is set up. John -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Ah, then so that purple smudge around your lips is because you drank the coolaid!!! That is the line the Microsoft FUD boys have been pushing for years. It wasn't true then, and its not true now. Linux is safer due to a lot of reasons, not the least of which is that drive by installs don't work, and even if you download an executable unknowingly it still won't run until YOU set permissions to make it executable. If you know what that means (setting the permissions) you are immediately suspicious of any unexpected request to do so. If you don't know, your safe because you don't know how to do it. -- ----------JSA--------- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It is more secure due to design and typical usage. Linux was built from bottom up with multi-users in mind, whereas Windows came from a single user, no network world. Also, Microsoft has done some incredibly stupid things, such as closely binding IE to the operating system, so that a bug in IE can kill the entire system. Also, in Linux, users are discouraged from running as root, unlike Windows, where users often have to run as admin, which means that malware gets full run of the system and many other technical reasons why it's so much harder to attack Linux. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
