RE: [SLE] process -:0 - is it a virus?
Hi list-- I sent this off a couple of hours ago. Usually 5 minutes after i send, SuSE mails me a copy back. This one it didn't --- it's lost in space ???? Has anybody else noticed similar "slowdown" in "traffic"? Gar GarUlbricht7 wrote:

I am running SuSE 8.1 as an internet gateway for a small network. Recently I've noticed an increased activity on hard disk access on this server which stops when I kill process -:0, which is started by /opt/kde3/bin/kdm. I do not really know what -:0 does but I haven't had any problems killing it. My question is: is this a valid process and then what does it do?
Thanks,
Carlos
Carlos -- the advice yesterday on "suse-security" list to someone who thought his machine was cracked was to unplug it from the net... put in another hard drive, restore, and monitor traffic in and out of restored box, while studying old drive.
Whether you should do that I cannot say
IRRC, kdm is the KDE desktop manager It get's installed as part of kdebase3-kdm. I am running 8.1 with KDE 3.1.2, and using kdm and my version of file:/opt/kde3/bin/kdm was created 2003-05-26 13:36 and is 105.7 KB in size. (kdebase3-kdm-3.1.2-24 created 5/26/03 at 01:36:37) Sorry I can't be of more help. Gar

I've been hanging on this list since SuSE 5, and in all that time, I have had 1 message dissapear. I wrote to Christopher Mahmood and he had no record of it, but I had it in my sent box. I'm guessing either some computer in the route dropped it, or carnivore accidently ate it, or then again...it might be some psychologist testing me. :-) I usually don't consider email to be so reliable that I would bet my life on it. But it rarely ever fails to work as expected. I usually get mail back within 1 minute of sending, sometimes even faster. -- I'm not really a human, but I play one on earth.

You can check in /var/log/mail. That will tell you what host it was sent to. Even if your email client has it in the sent folder does not mean that the email was successfully sent. - -- Jerry Feldman <gaf@blu.org> Boston Linux and Unix user group http://www.blu.org PGP key id:C5061EA9 PGP Key fingerprint:053C 73EC 3AC1 5C44 3E14 9245 FB00 3ED5 C506 1EA9 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2-rc1-SuSE (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE/WOpd+wA+1cUGHqkRAsAvAJ9KjbILxiMnaHXpDW8oBKPQ6246xQCeLscT j7cWCzBX8+/jqQTkS7BYYMM= =gxsS -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
