THE HELL: mounted, almost mounted or UMOUNTED DVD !!!!
Hi mailing list: Very, very extrange.!!! I have never seen this in the many years I've been using linux. I can install software from my dvdrom using yast2, and I can also watch movies using my dvdrom, but when I need to navigate, for exemple to copy a file from a DVD, >>it's NOT THERE<<< under /media/dvd where it should be mounted. To access the content of DVDS, I mean the data in order to copy, etc, I have then to become root and issue the comand line, as in the old linux times: mount /dev/dvd /media/dev Also, this seems to happend only with DVDS; CDs work as allways in suse systems anybody knows what the hell is hapening in this new SuSE 10.0 OSS final release I have just installed??? help, please greetings jorge

My /etc/fstab line is: /dev/dvdram /media/dvdram subfs noauto,fs=cdfss,ro,procuid,nosuid,nodev,exec,iocharset=utf8 0 0 And I have no problem whatsoever accessing the DVD from either /media/dvdram or media:/

Also check /media/dvdrecorder . It's probably somehow automounted. On the (GNOME) desktop an icon with the CD or DVD label will appear after 2 or 3 seconds. You can click on that icon to browse the medium. On the command line, cd into a directory of the medium and it will probably stay automounted. -- Karl Eichwalder R & D / Documentation SUSE Linux Products GmbH Key fingerprint = B2A3 AF2F CFC8 40B1 67EA 475A 5903 A21B 06EB 882E

Could someone whose CD / DVD auto-mounting is working properly please show us their /etc/fstab? In particular, the lines pertaining to their CD/DVD drive(s). When you execute "mount" is nothing mounted for /dev/dvdrecorder or /dev/dvd, for example? It might be /media/DVD_MOVIE or similar. I remember that in 9.3 (and 9.2?) there were "dynamic" mountpoints. But it's possible to make static ones: http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2005/05/dkukawka_hal_mountpoints.html This is just a guess though, without any further information. Good luck, -Paul

hi,
Executing mount is irrelevant. We're talking about the failure of the auto-mounting feature.
It's relevant as it will show you what is currently mounted.
The reason I asked about fstab entries was because mine are marked "noauto". Since I'm largely unfamiliar with the workings of the new (to me) auto-mounting / subfs / whatever system, I don't know if this might be the problem.
noauto means don't mount when mount -a is executed (e.g. at boot time). You can check such stuff in "man mount". As subfs is being used, devices should be automatically mounted, however it may not be to /media/dvdrecorder but rather to a dynamic mountpoint with /media. Just executing the command mount alone will show you what currently is and is not mounted. dmesg (after inserting a media and you see it's definitely not mounted anywhere in /media) might give more clues to why it's not automatically mounted. -Paul

My bad, it's "man fstab" for the explanation of noauto. See you, Paul
Well I have now some conclusions about what and how is happening: first, here is the part of my fstab regarging dvdrom units: /dev/dvd /media/dvd subfs noauto,fs=cdfss,ro,procuid,nosuid,nodev,exec,iocharset=utf8 0 0 /dev/dvdrecorder /media/dvdrecorder subfs noauto,fs=cdfss,ro,procuid,nosuid,nodev,exec,iocharset=utf8 0 0 /dev/hdb1 /data reiserfs defaults 1 2 NOW: 1-/dev/dvdrecorder is working property. It's ok; it automouts cds and dvs without problems. 2-/dev/dvd refuses to automount some media(not all): a)-It's not a hardware problem, because the same DVD unit works just fine(I've tried right today) in another machine, which has suse 9.2 installed. b)-/dev/dvd automounts cds without trouble, but refuses to automount DVDs(if you insert a DVD and press Ctr+alt+f10 any message apears, also when you issue the mount command without argument it appears /dev/dvd is not mounted), allthough for some reason inserted DVDs are usable by yast or xine's DVD navihation feature, be it that these programs mount the media when they need, or maybe that the media is unreportedly (sub/semi/auto)mounted. any hints? regards jorge
I've got exactly the same problem. my entries from fstab: /dev/dvd /media/dvd subfs noauto,fs=cdfss,ro,procuid,nosuid,nodev,exec,iocharset=utf8 0 0 /dev/dvdram /media/dvdram subfs noauto,fs=cdfss,rw,user,procuid,nosuid,nodev,exec,iocharset=utf8 0 0 I've added the 'user' option to /dev/dvdram, so I can mount it by hand. Automount on /dev/dvd works properly, but on /dev/dvdram only CDs gets recognized, DVD +/- R(W) or RAM doesn't. There are no entries in syslog when using /dev/dvd. here is the output from lshal with DVD in /dev/dvd (/dev/hdc): udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_label_SU1000_001' info.callouts.remove = {'hald-subfs-mount'} (string list) info.callouts.add = {'hald-add-selinux-mount-option', 'hald-subfs-mount'} (string list) volume.policy.desired_mount_point = 'SU1000.001' (string) volume.policy.mount_filesystem = 'iso9660' (string) volume.policy.should_mount = true (bool) info.udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_label_SU1000_001' (string) info.product = 'SU1000.001' (string) volume.disc.is_svcd = false (bool) volume.disc.is_vcd = false (bool) volume.disc.is_videodvd = false (bool) volume.disc.is_rewritable = false (bool) volume.disc.is_appendable = false (bool) volume.disc.is_blank = false (bool) volume.disc.has_data = true (bool) volume.disc.has_audio = false (bool) volume.disc.type = 'dvd_rom' (string) volume.size = 4696866816 (0x117f48000) (uint64) volume.num_blocks = 9173568 (0x8bfa40) (int) volume.block_size = 2048 (0x800) (int) info.capabilities = {'volume', 'block'} (string list) info.category = 'volume' (string) volume.is_partition = true (bool) volume.is_disc = true (bool) volume.is_mounted = true (bool) volume.mount_point = '/media/dvd' (string) volume.label = 'SU1000.001' (string) volume.uuid = '' (string) volume.fsversion = '' (string) volume.fsusage = 'filesystem' (string) volume.fstype = 'iso9660' (string) block.storage_device = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_serial_4000601333' (string) block.is_volume = true (bool) block.minor = 0 (0x0) (int) block.major = 22 (0x16) (int) block.device = '/dev/hdc' (string) linux.hotplug_type = 3 (0x3) (int) info.parent = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_serial_4000601333' (string) linux.sysfs_path_device = '/sys/block/hdc/fakevolume' (string) linux.sysfs_path = '/sys/block/hdc/fakevolume' (string) lshal with same DVD in /dev/dvdram (/dev/hdd): udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_part_1_size_4700372992' info.udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_part_1_size_4700372992' (string) info.product = 'Volume' (string) volume.disc.is_svcd = false (bool) volume.disc.is_vcd = false (bool) volume.disc.is_videodvd = false (bool) volume.disc.is_rewritable = true (bool) volume.disc.is_appendable = false (bool) volume.disc.is_blank = false (bool) volume.disc.has_data = true (bool) volume.disc.has_audio = false (bool) volume.disc.type = 'dvd_plus_rw' (string) volume.size = 4700372992 (0x1182a0000) (uint64) volume.num_blocks = 9180416 (0x8c1500) (int) volume.block_size = 2048 (0x800) (int) info.capabilities = {'volume', 'block'} (string list) info.category = 'volume' (string) volume.is_partition = true (bool) volume.is_disc = true (bool) volume.is_mounted = false (bool) volume.mount_point = '' (string) volume.label = '' (string) volume.uuid = '' (string) volume.fsversion = '' (string) volume.fsusage = '' (string) volume.fstype = '' (string) block.storage_device = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_serial_K3847813052' (string) block.is_volume = true (bool) block.minor = 64 (0x40) (int) block.major = 22 (0x16) (int) block.device = '/dev/hdd' (string) linux.hotplug_type = 3 (0x3) (int) info.parent = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_serial_K3847813052' (string) linux.sysfs_path_device = '/sys/block/hdd/fakevolume' (string) linux.sysfs_path = '/sys/block/hdd/fakevolume' (string) Regards, Glen Jorge Luis Arzola schrieb:

it seems that the package 'hal-0.5.4-6.i586.rpm' from SuSE is broken. It should contain the file 'hald-addon-usb-csr', but it doesn't. So get the source package from a SuSE-server and rebuild it (lots of devel-packages needed, not all of them are on DVD), and it will work.

No, Randall, this is not the problem. In Suse 9.3 the entries in the fstab were exactly the same as in 10.0, I am sure because I have a copy of 9.3's fstab in my backup cd. regards jorge

I'm running the 32-bit version and have no problem. I try to bring some light in the discussion about mount hotplugged media/volumes like CD/DVD/USB-Stick/USB-Harddisk on SUSE 10.0. 1.) The fstab entries have nothing to do with this process by default. All mounts of removable media in the system are done by HAL and the hald-subfs-mount helper by default. 2.) The way/behavior how hal mount a DVD/CD: * if a media/volume is inserted and and detected by HAL, HAL call hald-subfs-mount if the helper is defined in key 'info.callout.add' of the related device. * if the volume in HAL contains the key 'volume.policy.should_mount=true' the volume/partition will get mounted by hald-subfs-mount. The helper try this way to mount to /media: 2.1.) check if there is a directory in /media named as one of the symlinks from this command: 'udevinfo -q symlink -p /sys/block/hdc' (replace the path with the correct of the device.) 2.1.a) if there is a match, we mount to the first match in /media and create if a volumelabel is available a symlink to this device with the name of the volumelabel 2.1.b) if there is no matching dir in /media the helper create a dir named as the volumelabel or if not available as defined by the devicekey "volume.mount_point" in HAL. * If the media/volume is removed and the device is removed from the devicelist in HAL by udev, HAL umount the device and call hald-subfs-mount. The helper checks if all is clean umounted and umount if needed. Before exit the helper remove all by the helper created dirs and symlinks which are not mounted. I hope this explain how this currently work. If you have special problems, please file a bug in Bugzilla. Cheers, Danny
