On connecting to the system I get a screen full of garbage in the ppp log (see below). I've noticed that some applications like having "" quotes around name and secret; in pap/chap secrets; and other's do not. It's worth a try. -- $|=1;while(1){print pack("h*",'75861647f302d4560275f6272797f3');sleep(1); for(1..16){for(8,32,8,7){print chr($_);}select(undef,undef,undef,.05);}}

If you just put and asterick in the pap-secrets for the username, it will use the systems, which will allow their login password for dial-up to be the same as at a tty (though it does not log them in per se).
can anyone help with this?
It looks like it is either a bad phone line, or protocol mismatch. What system/OS is calling in? -- Joe & Sesil Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871

Looks like the machine dialling up might be trying to start PPP before logging in first. -- David Smith Tel: +44 (0)1454 462380 (direct) STMicroelectronics Fax: +44 (0)1454 617910 1000 Aztec West TINA (ST only): (065) 2380 Almondsbury Home: 01454 616963 BRISTOL Mobile: 07932 642724 BS32 4SQ Work Email: Dave.Smith@st.com Home Email: David.Smith@ds-electronics.co.uk
Thanks so far for the feedback. Ok, the system I am dialing into is Suse 7.1 Kernel 2.4.7-4 with mgetty & ppp installed. The system I am using to dial into it is my own Suse 7.1 using wvdial. I have tried the remote systems secrets file with both quotes & no quotes, my own system with pap, chap & terminal login. All make no difference in the error. I have no problem in connecting to my ISP using wvdial, just the Suse box I am setting up. The remote system has wvdial installed & it has no problems in connecting to it's ISP. Below are more errors from the log files. Have you tried dialling in with (e.g.) minicom, to see how the host computer responds? -- David Smith Tel: +44 (0)1454 462380 (direct) STMicroelectronics Fax: +44 (0)1454 617910 1000 Aztec West TINA (ST only): (065) 2380 Almondsbury Home: 01454 616963 BRISTOL Mobile: 07932 642724 BS32 4SQ Work Email: Dave.Smith@st.com Home Email: David.Smith@ds-electronics.co.uk
