[opensuse] How to make tags and comment work in Dolphin/Konqueror?
I'm finding that dolphin lacks the ability to add ratings/tags/comments to files that stick around. I can enter them, and they promptly vanish. Baloo is enabled and running. I have kio slaves in there. In dolphin, press F11 and you'll get a panel on the side. There are fields tags' and 'comments' where you are prompted to add. Click on them and popup appears where you can enter as appropriate. The panel on the right does not display the tags, is still say "enter tags" (or comments" rather than displaying. Thi is not how it used to be in previous revision. 2. Yes, I have exif tools, yes i have digikam though I prefer darktable. What I'm discussing here is not just image files but files in general. I should be able to tag any file, add a comment to any file and have it show up in Dolphin. This has NOTHING to do with the exif type information embedded in the file. As it happens, even when I use dolphin to look at flders of my heavily edited photographs, raw and processes, for which I've enhanced the exif information, for example to add copyright, dolphin does not display the exif information. It MAY have to do with baloo and all that. You are really hung up on exif and graphics. Please let go. I am NOT repeat NOT talking about exif data. Exif data is Dm independent. The exif information in a jpen or similar will show up and be editable using exiftool whatever the DM, whatever the OS. I'm talking about something very KDE specific. Gwenview - I presume you had a typo earlier - is irrelevant in this context. I should be able to tag files in dolphin regardless of the file type,, .zip, .doc, .html. .xlx, .md, .jar, .exe. It is only a subset of the exif-data that is shown when hovering the file or in the right info panel. Not all exif info can be selected in the settings. Also exif data is mixed with other data (like file owner, for example). The exif info about "Copyright" is not selectable or visible. I lamented about the lack of this IMO important data years ago, when dolphin replaced konqueror. If I remember correct I even put a bug report... For this reason I never use the right panel. I just looked at it now for this thread to check if things have changed to the better. no. It shows what I have changed in dolphin, so it's also able to read this info where dolphin stored it I should be able to tag files in dolphin regardless of the

and, by the way, it survived reboot. just an idea, it's not stored in the file. it's lost in copy. May be it needs local file system. Is you file NFS or any external file system? I live in KDE. I want to add comments. I want to have a way to organise files across the way they are organized in directories, that is by tagging. If, as you say, that is of no use to you then OK, but it is of use to me.

That's part of what I'm asking. I have baloo + various baloo-things loaded and its not doing tags. So where else does it get stored?

Well _some_ files you can meaningfully manipulate with exiftool. Others, such as HTML files have META entries that exiftool will report, for example see http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/TagNames/HTML.html or http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/TagNames/ZIP.html#GZIP BUT PLEASE NOTE: THESE ARE NOT NOT NOT writable. They are just using exiftool to report META information. I recall doing this in Konqueror in the days before Dolphin. Perhaps the KDE-3 enthusiasts will tell us if it can still be done there. yes works for me on local file system, not on usb hard drive, but I see no hidden file. I have desktop search enabled in systemsettings and none of the files I want are excluded and the directory I'm working in is included in the indexing.
Maybe its irrelevant, maybe not, BUT .... I just remounted a FS with "user_xattr". Added "comment" and some tags Shut down dolphin. Restarted dolphin. They stuck around. For the record, this is working for me on 13.2. (Using your method) I can click the star ratings, and they stay. I can click comments, add a comment, and it stays. I can Add tags as well. In Dolphin, I can click the "Find" Binoculars from the tool bar, Select Content, From Anywhere, and a Number of stars radio button, and I will get an instant list of only those files/folders with stars checked. (All of this is on my own machine's filesystem, no NAS or anything like that involved. By the way, Anton, if you can't modify the file, It appears you can't comment / tag /star it either. Well, I have seen it in MsDOS... I think it was a Norton utility that did it. Or an utility from pc magazine in assembler, I don't remember. It is a feature that many file browsers have done one way or the other over the years. If now there is an agreement on how to do it, that would be fantastic! It turns out I'm actually using that option since ever. But apparently I can not even try to create tags or anything on files, in dolphin. Can you see the pre-view pane? (F11 turns it on and off). Yes, I see tags and comments marked for viewing. But I don't see how to edit/add them. I have a menu that says "control". On it, an entry says "additional information". Ah, yes. I don't have them. That's it. I have to try on another machine. This laptop doesn't have the full kde environment. And I don't know if desktop search is enabled.
