Hi! I want to backup my SuSE 8.2 DVD by copying this DVD and burn it with dvdrecord. However, how can I create a iso image of the DVD? I use 'dd if=/dev/hdc of=/tmp/suse82.iso' to create the image, and dvdrecord to burn the DVD. However, the DVD contains corrupted files. Somebody an idea what I'm doing wrong?

Physical defects on the DVD? Well, your doing nothing wrong. Only you use the wrong tool. You might want to have a look at dd_rescue (package ddrescue): dd_rescue helps, when nobody else will: Your disk has crashed and you try to copy it over to another one. Standard Un*x tools like cp, cat, dd wail abort on every I/O error. dd_rescue won't. Of course, it won't do anything about those files on the dvd that are corrupted. Greetings from Bremen hartmut
