Perhaps you don't realize just how much I appreciated and valued your notes to me about this whole gcc/egcs thing.
To a point I do realize it :-) That's one of the reasons why I'm doing it. I remember how I appreciated (and still appreciate) getting such help and explanation myself, so I'm trying to pass on knowledge I have in order to maybe ease the way for others.
I guess this is the spirit that I found so refreshing about "the Linux community."
Well, this isn't exactly only the spirit of the "Linux community". At least I found and find this spirit also in other online communities. I started in Fido eleven years ago, added Compuserve shortly afterwards and then switched to Usenet 5 years ago and in all those places I found this spirit. Usenet is just getting bigger and bigger and so the signal to noise ratio decreases, at least in some corners. An unfortunate thing about Linux (which of course has many fortunate things) is that ordinary users who aren't developers but want to install new software are all too often forced to deal with the arcana of differences among compilers and libraries - and sometimes the differences among versions of supporting packages too. Most of us have had the painful experience of attempting to build and install frobozz-1.2.8.8 3, only to discover that it requires quigmire-3.9.12b rather than the quigmire-3.9.12a we had previously installed - which in turn requires blignack-2.01, available only from the author's website, which has recently been relocated. Every bit of elucidation on these subjects is much appreciated. Argh! I hate that! And it always happens that you do not find out about blignack-2.01 until after you have downloaded and installed the new quigmire, and tried to make install for a third time. That is one of the reasons I have yet to be able to get a CD-ripper going on my SuSE 6.1 system - they all require some set of libraries that I never seem to have. (either that, or it requires a system based on libc-s0.6).
Every bit of elucidation on these subjects is much appreciated.

Good point, Paul. I've encountered those problems, especially when I tried to compile GNOME. I got 'menued' so deep in missing dependencies that I gave up on GNOME and decided to stay with KDE. It would be VERY NICE of developers would include with their package all the libraries of the correct version, or at least offer that version as a tarball, to be tried if the 'lite' version doesn't load. This is especially true of 'special' or esoteric libraries.
