Re: [SLE] Kernel version and how to activate?

uname says I have kernel 2.4.19-4GB on my Athlon machine. That's from September.
YaST says that the installed kernel version is: k_athlon-2.4.19-66
1) Is uname showing me the same kind of thing that YaST is talking about? Or are these two different "kernels"??
uname is reporting the operating system release YaST is reporting the rpm release version They are the same kernel.
2) What do I do to make the k_athlon kernel active?
It is active (at least according to rpm)
2) Should I be concerned about k_athlon-2.4.19-167.i586.rpm that's available in the SuSE section of rpmfind and other sites?
Yes: markgray@soyo:/ARK/8.1-updates> cat rpm/i586/k_athlon-2.4.19-167.i586_en.info k_athlon: Kernel optimized for AMD Athlon processors ---------------------------------------------------------------------- File: k_athlon-2.4.19-167.i586.rpm Patchrpm: k_athlon-2.4.19-167.i586.patch.rpm Version: 2.4.19 Size: 21392 kB Patchsize: 13808 kB Date: Wed 27 Nov 2002 03:35:33 AM CET Source: k_athlon-2.4.19-167.src.rpm Security: No ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Description: This kernel update fixes several problems that can result in crashes or other malfunctions, in particular if using ICP Vortex RAID controllers or multiple IDE disks. It is necessary to reboot after applying the patch in order for the changes to become effective.
I'm having REALLY bad X problems, and a few people have suggested that an updated kernel will help.
What's the poop?
You did not mention you had an Athlon -- this is built from the same kernel sources as k_deflt-2.4.19-174 and fixes the same problems.
Hi. Not to sound ungrateful or anything, but I'm still confused. See below. On Friday 17 January 2003 08:12, Mark Gray wrote:

Er... um.... the September release was what came out on the CDs, wasn't it? The k_athlon-2.4.19.66 and the k_deflt-2.4.19.74 are both dated a month later, which led me to believe that these were updates for Athlon and Intel, respectively. So, what you are saying, here, is that I need not have bothered to download? It was exactly the same code as what came on my CDs and DVD?

This is like pulling teeth.... Does that statement mean that what boots up and runs my computer is now a newer version of the Linux kernel than what I installed from DVD? Or is there some additional step that is needed AFTER the rpm does its thing? I did reboot.

Yes:

I do have an Athlon, which is what I thought I told YaST when I installed 8.1. The description text that you quote above is exactly the same as the info that comes with k_athlon-2.4.19.66 and the k_deflt-2.4.19.74 (both of which packages were dated a few days apart), but YOURS is supposedly a later version. Is this telling me that: a) there were no changes between 2.4.19-66 and 2.4.19-167? or b) that they didn't bother to edit the info for the package? or c) they lied about what the earlier ones fixed, but now they think they've got it right? I'm right where I started, or maybe a couple of steps back. All I want is to have a better shot at my system -- especially X -- working without crashes. I thought I was doing that by accepting what looked like a newer kernel version in YOU. Now, you seem to be telling that either: 1) what's in the Online Update mirrors is no newer than what came off my DVD or 2) I do have something newer, and I do have it installed, but my system is still using the original version until I push the magic button.... whatever-in-hell the magic button is.... /kevin
