fixing boot sector and boot loader
Hello list, I am running a dual boot machine, suse 9.2 and w2k. My w2k install has died on me again (or it just feels abandoned). So I need to reinstall it. But this will kill the bootsector on c: (as I have to reformat c: too) which I guess will stop my suse install from working. My question is, is it relatively painless to just fix the suse boot loader once my machine is tainted with w2k again (I got the 9.2 DVD)? I thought I´d ask first before I am on my own. As my knowledge of linux is quite limited. Mikael

hmm. but suse will be inaccessible once I've done the w2k install. How would I go about running grub-install /dev/hda Can I boot into my current suse install from the DVD? Please bear with these simple questions as this is my first linux install ever. Are there any repair options while starting the install from the suse DVD?

You boot using the install DVD using rescue mode and then follow the instructions from the archives. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

You boot using the install DVD using rescue mode and then follow the instructions from the archives.
You can also boot the installation dvd/cd and select installation, then a couple of screens later you can select to start an installed system. That will boot your already installed linux, obviously, and from there you can use the command line to do the grub-install thing or else use YAST to do it for you. Richard

Yes you can do repair from the install DVD, choose to install, and then look for the repair prompt. You can have it diagnose any potential problem (I did this in order to get familiar with this aspect) or choose specific problems to address. The prompts are good when you get to this part. SuSE did a nice job on this aspect. IMO. Mike
