[opensuse] I can't burn DVDs in 10.1
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I have an image file that I want to burn to a dvd using a procedure that worked with this machine when it had SuSE 9.3, but not now. K3b complains when I start it with: cdrecord = 2.6.8 <-- in red color Since Linux kernel 2.6.8 cdrecord Solution: Use K3bSetup to solve this problem. Notice that the message doesn't really says what is the problem, and that there is no K3bSetup program. Anyhow, I'm not interested in k3b at the moment, the problem is somewhere else, read ahead. I try the command line - a command line known to work previously in this machine: nimrodel:~ # time growisofs -Z /dev/hdc=/file3 -speed=4 Executing 'builtin_dd if=/file3 of=/dev/hdc obs=32k seek=0' /dev/hdc: "Current Write Speed" is 4.1x1385KBps. 1114112/4699717632 ( 0.0%) @0.0x, remaining 351:26 RBU 100.0% 1114112/4699717632 ( 0.0%) @0.0x, remaining 562:18 RBU 100.0% 1114112/4699717632 ( 0.0%) @0.0x, remaining 773:10 RBU 100.0% ... 4676747264/4699717632 (99.5%) @1.1x, remaining 0:09 RBU 68.5% 4693065728/4699717632 (99.9%) @3.4x, remaining 0:02 RBU 19.8% builtin_dd: 2294784*2KB out @ average 1.7x1385KBps /dev/hdc: flushing cache :-[ SYNCHRONOUS FLUSH CACHE failed with SK=3h/ASC=A0h/ACQ=80h]: Input/output error real 33m12.927s user 0m1.512s sys 0m19.525s I can not mount it (fstab is irrelevant, it is a read error, see later): nimrodel:~ # mount /mnt/dvd.crypta2/ Password: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop4, missing codepage or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so (the image is encrypted, but that is irrelevant for the problem) And kernel log shows the error: Sep 27 01:41:35 nimrodel kernel: hdc: media error (bad sector): status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } Sep 27 01:41:35 nimrodel kernel: hdc: media error (bad sector): error=0x34 { AbortedCommand LastFailedSense=0x03 } Sep 27 01:41:35 nimrodel kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown Sep 27 01:41:35 nimrodel kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 0 Sep 27 01:41:35 nimrodel kernel: Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 0 Sep 27 01:41:42 nimrodel kernel: hdc: media error (bad sector): status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } Sep 27 01:41:42 nimrodel kernel: hdc: media error (bad sector): error=0x34 { AbortedCommand LastFailedSense=0x03 } Sep 27 01:41:42 nimrodel kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown Sep 27 01:41:42 nimrodel kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 0 Sep 27 01:41:42 nimrodel kernel: Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 0 Sep 27 01:41:42 nimrodel kernel: EXT3-fs: unable to read superblock If I try to read back the disk: nimrodel:/biggy # time nice dd if=/dev/hdc of=cdimage dd: reading `/dev/hdc': Input/output error 0+0 records in 0+0 records out 0 bytes (0 B) copied, 13.8115 seconds, 0.0 kB/s real 0m13.905s user 0m0.000s sys 0m0.008s And the kernel log shows: Sep 27 02:48:47 nimrodel kernel: hdc: media error (bad sector): status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } Sep 27 02:48:47 nimrodel kernel: hdc: media error (bad sector): error=0x34 { AbortedCommand LastFailedSense=0x03 } Sep 27 02:48:47 nimrodel kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown Sep 27 02:48:47 nimrodel kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 0 Sep 27 02:48:47 nimrodel kernel: Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 0 Sep 27 02:48:53 nimrodel kernel: hdc: media error (bad sector): status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } Sep 27 02:48:53 nimrodel kernel: hdc: media error (bad sector): error=0x34 { AbortedCommand LastFailedSense=0x03 } Sep 27 02:48:53 nimrodel kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown Sep 27 02:48:53 nimrodel kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 0 Sep 27 02:48:53 nimrodel kernel: Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 0 The above was using TDK DVD+R Media, 4.7Gb 1*16 speed, a box I bought today. No, no, I have a problem with k3b doing incomplete reportings of it self. It says that "since kernel 2.6.8"...? What? What happened since that kernel? In fact, cdrecrod is "cdrecord-2.01-25". But my big problem is not cdrecord, but growisofs. I can burn CDS, but not DVDs, they come out very badly. And the unit hasn't burn more than a dozen dvds or so. It's a year old more or less. Carlos, My first thought, from your testings so far, would seem to indicate a faulty DVD burner. Have you checked to see if there was a new firmware update for this unit? When was the last time you were able to burn a DVD? Can you read a DVD disc from beginning to end without problems? Can you view a dual-layer DVD without problems? Have you checked your settings in K3b or tried changing any of them concerning the drive to see what effect that has? Have you tried burning from the shell, rather than K3b? I doubt it will make a difference, just a thought. Have you tried another DVD drive to test your setup? Have you checked the cable from the mobo to the drive. Any bios changes on the mobo recently that might affect the system seeing it as a dvd drive? Hopefully one of those questions will help lead you to something. What make & model drive is it? bye, Lee --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'm starting to think that too :-(
Have you checked to see if there was a new firmware update for this unit?
I know there is, but as it didn't affect me previously, I didn't bother.
When was the last time you were able to burn a DVD?
About July, when I made a full backup to install 10.1.
Can you read a DVD disc from beginning to end without problems?
Yep. And I can burn CDs (not dvds)
Can you view a dual-layer DVD without problems?
Yep. The one from SuSE 9.3. Only one faulty package.
Have you checked your settings in K3b or tried changing any of them concerning the drive to see what effect that has?
Yes.
Have you tried burning from the shell, rather than K3b?
Yes, that's what I first did, using growisofs. I turned to k3b later.
I doubt it will make a difference, just a thought. Have you tried another DVD drive to test your setup?
That's my only one writer, unfortunately. This is at home.
Have you checked the cable from the mobo to the drive.
I will do that tonight, when I power off. I have a kernel update with reboot pending just now.
Any bios changes on the mobo recently that might affect the system seeing it as a dvd drive?
No, no bios changes that I can remember. I upgraded from 512 Mb to 1 Gb, but that was before the last successful burn, I think - yes, sure, just found the receipt: March.
Hopefully one of those questions will help lead you to something. What make & model drive is it?

Thanks for your points. ========= Ok, it sounds as though you have made extensive tests with the thing. Seems odd that it would still burn a CD though, if something was wrong with the burning mechanism in the drive, doesn't it? Quite odd indeed, but everything points to the drive.
I'm presently using the LG GSA-4167B drive and have sold a few as well. Yours appears to be an earlier model number and I know they improved those things a lot! Very, very odd. Maybe it uses different lasers for each thing? I unplugged/replugged the IDE cable, tried in windoze-me with nero 5, failed to read the dvd (it said it was an audio track). Rebooted in Linux, burned again, mounted... and it worked. :-OO Dirty lenses? Another difference is that yesterday the system had been running for 6 days, and I usually suspend to disk, not halt. Another potential test, if feasible, is to try the drive in Windows XP, but only after trying the actions suggested such as ensuring a stable cable connection, using the latest firmware, and seeing if the drive can read entire single and dual layer DVDs. If it's under warranty, then the drive can possibly be replaced by the manufacturer, though they might require that you try it in Windows XP (but I hope I'm wrong). BandiPat wrote:

Another potential test, if feasible, is to try the drive in Windows XP,
I unplugged and replugged the ide cable, then I tried in my Win-Me with Nero 5, which failed (windows said it was an audio track). Then I tried again in Linux, and... it did work! And it mounted! With a RW dvd at 2x. Well, It is a new kernel also (2.6.16.21-0.25-default). I don't understand it. I'm half-happy, because I don't understand it. Dirty lens? - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
