USB / kpilotDaemon / usbserial failure
Hotsyncing my Palm Tungsten T via USB to my Linux machine has been spotty at best. Sometimes I can sync just fine and other times the entire USB hotplug system locks up solid and I can't even shut down properly (hard reset required). Tried j-pilot, kpilot and pilot-xfer and all seem to suffer the same problems. Could be a hotplug specific thing too because the USB scanner often won't talk to Linux? My newbie eyes reading the log message suggests it is a visor or usbserial problem and not hotplug. Here is a snapshot from the /var/log/messages -- Sep 23 10:32:52 linux kernel: usb.c: registered new driver usbdevfs Sep 23 10:32:52 linux kernel: usb.c: registered new driver hub Sep 23 10:32:52 linux kernel: usb-uhci.c: $Revision: 1.275 $ time 19:05:30 Aug 6 2003 Sep 23 10:32:52 linux kernel: usb-uhci.c: High bandwidth mode enabled Sep 23 10:32:52 linux kernel: usb-uhci.c: USB UHCI at I/O 0xe000, IRQ 5 Sep 23 10:32:52 linux kernel: usb-uhci.c: Detected 2 ports Sep 23 10:32:52 linux kernel: usb.c: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 1 Sep 23 10:32:52 linux kernel: hub.c: USB hub found Sep 23 10:32:52 linux kernel: hub.c: 2 ports detected Sep 23 10:32:52 linux kernel: usb-uhci.c: USB UHCI at I/O 0xdc00, IRQ 5 Sep 23 10:32:52 linux kernel: usb-uhci.c: Detected 2 ports Sep 23 10:32:52 linux kernel: usb.c: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 2 Sep 23 10:32:52 linux kernel: hub.c: USB hub found Sep 23 10:32:52 linux kernel: hub.c: 2 ports detected Sep 23 10:32:52 linux kernel: usb-uhci.c: v1.275:USB Universal Host Controller Interface driver Sep 23 10:32:52 linux kernel: uhci.c: USB Universal Host Controller Interface driver v1.1 Sep 23 10:32:52 linux kernel: hub.c: new USB device 00:11.3-2, assigned address 2 Sep 23 10:32:52 linux kernel: hub.c: USB hub found Sep 23 10:32:52 linux kernel: hub.c: 4 ports detected Sep 23 10:32:52 linux kernel: mice: PS/2 mouse device common for all mice Sep 23 10:32:52 linux kernel: hub.c: new USB device 00:11.3-2.3, assigned address 3 Sep 23 10:32:52 linux kernel: usb.c: USB device 3 (vend/prod 0x3f0/0x101) is not claimed by any active driver. I had a similar problem on my old PC. Changing to a new PC (not for that reason, of course!) with the same SuSE installation, I have no problems. This suggests to me that you might have either a hardware problem or a driver issue. Not terribly helpful, I'm afraid! How many USB ports did you have... did the new machine use the same hub or did that change? Hardware problems don't sound right because I don't experience any of these symptoms in 'that other operating system'. Must be something causing the hotplugging services to freeze. -AD

Everything was the same except for the PC. That's why I decided my problem was either hardware or a driver issue.

I had no obvious problems in Windows either. Which is why I suspect it's not so much faulty hardware as poorly supported/nonstandard hardware. Although the new PC is (obviously) newer than the old one, everything works perfectly now! I know it's not a lot of consolation, but it *should* work fine, so it's either a hardware fault (unlikely, as you say) or drivers. Perhaps you could try the latest version of the USB stack and drivers? Hi John Looks like kPilot was the problem. I've uninstalled kPilot and as I type am syncing with jpilot. Works fine (today at least :-> ). -AD -- ------------------------------------- Alex Doll alex.doll@agdconsulting.ca IT Consulting - Mineral Process Engineer http://www.agdconsulting.ca ----------------------------------------

Well, that's good! (You had said that pilot-link and jpilot were suffering the same problem - glad to hear that they got fixed, because it's much easier to sort software than hardware/driver issues!) They both were, but kpilot installed an extra file that caused the kernel USB subsystem to kack: kpilotDaemon. Once I uninstalled kpilot, this daemon was removed from the system and the hotplugging log file no longer shows usb system stopping. -AD -- ------------------------------------- Alex Doll alex.doll@agdconsulting.ca IT Consulting - Mineral Process Engineer http://www.agdconsulting.ca ----------------------------------------

Yikes! Still, JPilot's better anyway :-) John -- John Pettigrew Headstrong Games john@headstrong-games.co.uk Fun : Strategy : Price http://www.headstrong-games.co.uk/ Board games that won't break the bank
