In response to my "the text says "the system will be halted immediately", then "runlevel 0> has been reached", but the computer stays on. With previous versions, there was an automatic poweroff, but not with 7.3", on Thursday, 17 January 2002, Keith Winston wrote:
A1: This is caused by the APIC kernel bug in the default kernels. You can fix it by either typing "disableapic" at the linux: prompt during boot, or better by changing "enableapic" to "disableapic" in LILO.
That was what SuSE technical support told me right after I first installed the 7.3, and of course I immediately did it. From /boot/lilo.log: Added linux * <dev=0xb1,hd=96,cyl=52,sct=228> "ro root=1602 BOOT_FILE=/boot/vmlinuz enableapic vga=0x0314 disableapic ide=nodma apm=off" Then, reading the sdb, I changed the last item above to "apm=real-mode-poweroff" It made no difference. I guess that's because in BIOS, Power Management, APM: Disabled. Thanks for the input, Keith, but that alone is not enough (sigh...)
