[opensuse] firefox won't show data on certain websites
Howdy, I have certain websites that I frequently use, but for some reason firefox won't show the data on those sites. They work fine in google chrome, and sometimes in konqueror (although sometimes also it shuts it down). I would like to upload a copy of screen shots to the web and provide a link so people can see what I am talking about. What do people use to upload a screen shot? I can't remember the address. I am using firefox 10.0.1. It just updated with apper this morning, but the problem began before the update. I was kind of hoping the update would fix it. Try also the page http://usa.ntm.org/. That page should have several lines of text underneath the smaller pictures in the middle of the page, but on my screen only the pictures and their captions show up. This also works for me. Please try to start firefox with -safe-mode and report back if you still have this issue. It will skip loading your addons to make sure we test Firefox w/o third party stuff. I restarted firefox in safe mode, and it has no effect. The same page still doesn't show the text. Also in response to Dylan, When I highlight, the text does not show up. However, I hit ctrl-u to view the source, and the text body is in the source document, but for some reason it does not display. No problem with installed versions of SM or FF here. You could login as another user or create another Firefox profile to see if it is a profile issue. What are your oS and DE versions? If older like Evergreen maybe there is a need for some newer dep version, Pango maybe, or ??? -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." I am using openeSUSE 12.1 and KDE 4.7.4. I don't know if or how I am using Evergreen or Pango. Can you tell me how I might check that? I might also note that I just tried to connect to the website from my laptop, which I have right next to the computer I am having a problem with, and my laptop does not have the same problem. My laptop on the same version of openSUSE and KDE and connected to the same network is able to see those pages in firefox (same version of firefox) without any problem. This definitely points to a problem in your firefox user profile - if you close firefox, rename ~/.mozilla (to ~/.mozilla.bak for example) and re-open firefox, can you then see the missing text? I was really hopeful, and renamed the directory. When opening firefox it recreated a new directory and did everything it was supposed to do. All my add-ons were gone and bookmarks (as expected for making a new profile). Unfortunately, no change on trying to load the page in question. The text is still missing. Stumped. Likewise :( All I can suggest now is the de-install/re-install of firefox ... -- If you look long enough into the void the void begins to look back through you. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

BTW, where did you get your Firefox from - Mozilla or from the normal oS repo? Also, which version of java do you have installed? Do you have NoScript installed? My repo is http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_12.1/.
Also, which version of java do you have installed?
java-1_6_0-openjdk - Java runtime environment based on OpenJDK 6 and IcedTea 6
Do you have NoScript installed?
I don't have that installed. Interestingly enough, on the firefox add-ons search, the text did not show up for any of the add-ons either.

I am wondering......have you checked your settings for Firefox (Edit>Preferences>) in particular the Content one for the Fonts (and whether a site is allowed to use own fonts or the ones you have assigned to FF), and for blocking material on sites? BOOM! I had the fonts set for "allow websites to use their own fonts". When I unchecked it, forcing web sites to use the fonts I selected, all the text became suddenly visible. WHEW! I hate mysteries so am glad this one is now solved :-) . BTW, what the above suggests to me is that you may not have the full range of available fonts installed which is why those on that site (and others) would not display. (And don't forget: there are fonts specially designed for printing and ones for display on monitors. My personal choice for printing is Bookman Old Style and both DejaVu and Droid for use on the monitor.) Do you know if the content is there, but invisible; or not there at all? That is for sure. I quit using flash blocker as it made navigation on some sites impossible. which is not a problem when they need my attention, but it is when I need them. Solution is to have 2 browsers, one without blocking extensions for safe sites, or better to say those that you need, and one with blockers for all other. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I am not having any problems with viewing the above site nor the other URL you provided. The only thing I can see is that you are using AdBlockPlus (ABP) - but seeing as how you started Firefox in safe-mode (you really did start it in safe-mode?) this addon doesn't appear to be the cause of the problem.
