I'm having problems compiling the 2.4.20 kernel provided by SuSE and I want to try compiling the 2.4.22 kernel instead. Is their anyway to patch in the SuSE specific features like the splash screen and modified tty terminal on tty1? Likewise, how would I go about doing this to one of the experimental 2.5 kernels? Alternatively, is their a kernel source for the 2.4.22 kernel that has these features already put in the source?

Hello, That's a great question. I've compiled and installed 2.4.22 on my laptop as it has better ACPI support for me. I'd really like to get the patches that SuSE included in their kernel. Is that possible? Thanks, Jason On Thu, 2003-09-18 at 20:13, Yaakov Nemoy wrote:

I float in a pretty similar boat when it comes to needing a custom kernel for ACPI/initrd reasons. I check the SuSE FTP server ever week or so for the latest set of patches provided by 'mantel'. There is a full set of RPMs, tarball's, and patches to use against a clean linux src tree. ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel/next Hope this helps, -John -- Where zen ends, the ass kicking begins...

Which problems exactly?? Maybe we can help you. I just compiled the kernel... and after quite a lot of tinkling I thinkg I got to a pretty good setup (although there are some non-documented options I believe included by SuSE that I am not very sure of) but it works Sergio A las 11:13 del 18 de Sep de 2003, Yaakov Nemoy dijo:

I did once work out what the differnces were with splash, patched my kernel by hand, but the splash screen did not appear, I most likely missed something. I would suggest trying the latest gcc from SuSE, I did have some problems with the one on the distribution media. 2.4.22 builds here, but hangs on hwscan, it worked when I moved hwscan from /etc/init.d, but it didn't pick up my USB devices. i also tried 2.6.0-test5 which failed fsck, perhaps it would need a later reiserfsprogs, but the namesys site seems to suggest it may not work with 2.4. If I mounted root rw, 2.6.0-test5 came all the way up, but with various things failing to start, guess SuSE 9.0 will sort out a few more rough edges. Regards Sid. Sergio Dominguez wrote:

Its not so much a matter of using the latest gcc just to make my kernel compile, but that I want to use the latest kernel if possible. -----Original Message----- From: Sid Boyce [mailto:sboyce@blueyonder.co.uk] Sent: Friday, September 19, 2003 09.33 Cc: SuSE Linux Mailing List Subject: Re: [SLE] Re: 2.4.22 kernel I did once work out what the differnces were with splash, patched my kernel by hand, but the splash screen did not appear, I most likely missed something. So then use it... If you can't live without the splash screen, then you're booting too often. :-) -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ + Bruce S. Its also the background graphics that are used for tty1, and other little features which I appreciate, and having a good splash screen is good for demonstrations. Its nice to show people that I can customize X, Y, and Z and still retain the simple look and feel of SuSE, especially to windows users. -----Original Message----- From: Bruce Marshall [mailto:bmarsh@bmarsh.com] Sent: Friday, September 19, 2003 12.00 To: SLE Subject: Re: [SLE] Re: 2.4.22 kernel On Friday 19 September 2003 9:58 am, Yaakov Nemoy wrote:
