Hi.
On my SuSE 8.1 I have problems with my DVD drive. If I take ls options all seems to be ok.
The DVD is not visible in the /var/log/boot.msg file under the scsi emulation. Only visible is my CD-RW drive.
I installed 8.1 on another harddisk, and here all was working ok. The ls's was very equal to my not working install.
Here both my DVD and my CD-RW drives are visible in the boot.msg file.
Here I have the ls listings. First from the install with the non working DVD drive:
eurit:/dev # ls -l /dev/sr0 /dev/sr1 /dev/hdc /dev/hdd /dev/dvd /dev/cdrecorder lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Dec 25 21:25 /dev/cdrecorder -> /dev/sr1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Dec 28 09:57 /dev/dvd -> /dev/sr0 brw-rw---- 1 root disk 22, 0 Dec 28 13:44 /dev/hdc brw-rw---- 1 root disk 22, 64 Sep 9 22:24 /dev/hdd brw------- 1 erik disk 11, 0 Dec 28 09:55 /dev/sr0 brw------- 1 erik disk 11, 1 Sep 9 22:24 /dev/sr1 eurit:/dev # ls -il /dev/sr0 /dev/sr1 /dev/hdc /dev/hdd /dev/dvd /dev/cdrecorder 158499 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Dec 25 21:25 /dev/cdrecorder -> /dev/sr1 65435 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Dec 28 09:57 /dev/dvd -> /dev/sr0 195610 brw-rw---- 1 root disk 22, 0 Dec 28 13:44 /dev/hdc 33367 brw-rw---- 1 root disk 22, 64 Sep 9 22:24 /dev/hdd 65430 brw------- 1 erik disk 11, 0 Dec 28 09:55 /dev/sr0 38983 brw------- 1 erik disk 11, 1 Sep 9 22:24 /dev/sr1 eurit:/dev # ls -Il /dev/sr0 /dev/sr1 /dev/hdc /dev/hdd /dev/dvd /dev/cdrecorder /dev/cdrecorder /dev/dvd /dev/hdc /dev/hdd /dev/sr0 /dev/sr1
Output from /var/log/boot.msg:

Just add hdd=ide-scsi as a boot parameter and you'll see your DVD. Catimimi.
Hope to get valuable hints from you :-)

Hi again, and thanks for the reply. On my hdd is my CD-RW, and the line is added to the /etc/lilo.conf. I suppose its there you mean to add it ?. But I attach it here. I have added it twice, but maybe a fault ?. boot = /dev/hda3 change-rules reset read-only menu-scheme = Wb:kw:Wb:Wb prompt timeout = 80 message = /boot/message image = /boot/vmlinuz label = linux root = /dev/hda3 vga = 791 initrd = /boot/initrd append = "hdd=ide-scsi apic" image = /boot/vmlinuz.shipped label = failsafe root = /dev/hda3 vga = 791 initrd = /boot/initrd.shipped append = "ide=nodma apm=off acpi=off vga=normal nosmp maxcpus=0 disableapic 3 hdd=ide-scsi apic" optional As far as I know, the hdc=ide-scsi is obsolete with SuSE 8.1 ?.

No, it is still required. Did you run lilo after making the changes to lilo.conf? Please trim unnecessary content, old sig's, etc from your posts and avoid TOFU. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://home.indy.rr.com/paka @ http://counter.li.org icq#173753138

I'm not sure what you mean. I answered Catimimi@libertysurf.fr and have erased the first send infos. I cannot see what YOU mean. TOFU. And you have to transkate that. It cannot be found in any diary.

Hi
Please trim unnecessary content, old sig's, etc from your posts and avoid TOFU.
If You look carefully, it was NOT top-post.. just too much quote in the bottom. Why should people avoid top-posting, so that they need to scroll down every time they read a reply? What a waste of time and effort... just to please some "gurus'".. If You follow how pepole usually reply when they are "beginners", it is top-posting.. it is so logical! So it must be a good thing... New users has not been brain-washed to some angient way of doing things.. Things changes You know. So let them change, do not hold on to some old document that is out-of-date what comes to common way of doing things. If one can't remember what was said in the thread, they could THEN scroll down and read the history. I agree that people should trim the quote, so unneccessary stuff is being deleted. I have also seen complains about extra-quoting wasting bandwidth.. True, but these days, who really cares? I'm sure there is enought bandwidth to carry some extra lines. But I really can't understand why people should bottom-post! If that would be the correct way, kmail and other e-mail clients should then start showing the message from the bottom! I haven't seen ANY e-mail client that does this.. Also phrase "top-posting is so micosoftish" just shows the level of IQ of the writer. Shame on him/her! Basically that phrase states, that M$ invented e-mail... What a laugh... This has been going on and on and on.. And always coming from people, that put themselves higher that other people... grow up! This is not directed to You, but for everyone that complains about this. I'm so sad seeing that perhaps the best Linux-list in the whole world is concentrating to teach people how to follow some strange "standard" that is against human logic, making things more difficult to read and write. This is my last rant about this. If I get flamed, who cares. I just put those people to ignore-list, period. Jaska.
Gang, Going back into the dim dark ages of email, circa 1991, the program POPMail, wonderfully DOS-based, used to quote a message and put you in edit mode AT THE TOP, which is where most people will look first. For example, no matter whether I'm using Evolution, Outlook (yes, I do use it sometimes, to sync with my e740 PDA), or a web-based email system, they ALL stick you at the top of the quoted text. The intelligent thing to do, which seems to be lost on many people, is to then edit out excess quoting (i.e. don't quote a whole 200 line email to just add "I agree", and also to INTELLIGENTLY quote... i.e. if I wish to reply to a certain point in the original email, I would edit all before that point, and place my reply AFTER the quote, thus even allowing the OS-challenged to follow the thread of a conversation. This CRAP about boit top-posting is just that - complete and utter CRAP. My wife sorts her email from the oldest at the top to the newest at the bottom - I do it the other way around so, as soon as I open whatever email program I'm currently using, I see the NEW stuff immediately. Can we PLEASE drop the "top posting is against the RFC's" thread, and just get back to the real purpose of this mailinglist - HELPING EACH OTHER !! Jon

That is good. Participate in this list and put aside your anger. By the way, are you a Dane? If so, I know good Norwegian jokes to cheer you up with. As my son would say, "Be cool , be happy". :))))

<snip> I second this. This is a very good list, without which SuSE could not have been installed on a Toshiba laptop. With bitter previous experience, ignore mails with rants or differing opinions. We should not indulge in personal attacks. Some of the more experienced Linux-ers might get fed-up with newbies ( me included) asking basic questions. Please bear with us and give as much help as possible.
Its a very good list, I confess too. I have been very glad being here all the time. I'll give as much help that I can, but I'm not sa experienced, but will try to avoid basic questions. Yep. The very first person I met when I went on line (14 years ago) was the moderator of intelec-firearms. we're still good freinds. I'm on another private list that rose out of the ashes of or RIME. I once pointed out on that list it was irritating the number of DAN's (dumb A$$ Newbies) I have to deal with* and someone pointed out unlike when I got started, nowdays all you need to know is how to click a mouse button. Computers are too user freindly. Joe * as an example, I once posted on pirate asking if anyone knew what STFW meant. one reply came back saying how should the person be able to figure out what that means. So I suggested they "search the fawking web" to learn the answer. their reply? "what good would that do?" -- ... A bad sales move - mention Windows http://tigger.tmcom.com\~josad nqs@kfalls.net
