You only can comminicate with other Linux Boxes usiong PLIP (please correct me if I'm wrong). To transfer files to a XT, just set up a serial login (getty/agetty/mgetty on the serial port), log in from the XT using a terminal emulation, and use zmodem to transfer files. Use the linux Box as a BBS like server....

Hi Bodo; This sounds interesting. Sorry if I seem a little slow, but what files/programs would I need on my Linux box and on the XT. Also what "howto" is there on this? I just looked at "agetty" 's man page. Do I understand it right, if I set up an account and use this command then I could use the XT as a sort of dumb termanal? Also I would not need a modem for the XT, right? Thanks for your help. SuSE is GREAT! Jim, One quick addition - a null modem cable will probably be needed to complete the connection. Regards, Stu -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

You can also use a serial port with a null modem cable... I believe plip is for using the parallel port (no null modem needed)... You can run tcpip through either with PPP for both machines if you use serial-networking and I believe PLIP has it's own protocal... Check the Serial howto or minihowto for null modem cable connection... It also tell you how to build a null modem cable... Check the man for PLIP to see it's capablities...
