How do I re-install MySQL to get usage of the DB - including setting the root password ?
Reinstall the mysql packages, then use mysqladmin to set the password.
Installed packages, rebooted and:
hechler:~ # /usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'root' /usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)' Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' exists!
then remove it. DUH!
