Elm and pine will build their directories when you run them the first time. I dont have much experience with elm but mutt depends on a resource file in your home directory called .muttrc. The best thing with mutt is to visit Elkin's pages on how to configure mutt. I can supply a sample .muttrc if you want but you will need to hack it a bit and take some things out that you may not want. Mutt is a nice email client with a lot of configuration options. Let me know if you would like to see a sample .muttrc. By the way, if you downlod mutt from the web, it compiles without a problem on SuSE 5.3. The other part of the thing is that you need to have something to get the email from a POP server (like your isp) to your client. Most people use fetchmail to do this but you can configure mutt to grab your email also if you compile it with pop3 support. Fetchmail is quite easy to setup and use. It also requires one resource file called .fetchmailrc. This can be in a user's home directory or you can place it in the root and have it poll for a user or users. You can do a man fetchmail and see its options. I have fetchmail running automatically here in the ip-up script in daemon mode which means it connects whenever I start a ppp session and checks my pop3 email server at predetermined times. Drop me a private email if you would like samples of .muttrc or .fetchmailrc resource files. Some mutt resources are: <A HREF="http://www.mutt.org</A">http://www.mutt.org</A> <A HREF="http://www.math.fu-berlin.de/~leitner/mutt/faq.html</A">http://www.math.fu-berlin.de/~leitner/mutt/faq.html</A> This should get you started with mutt. -- Michael Perry mperry@basin.com ------------------ - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

Word I get here is that elm has security holes, is no longer supported, and the people who used to support it have moved on to mutt, which is derived from elm. This might have something to do with the lack of man pages on elm. When you set it up, you need to specify a separate pop server from the SMTP server, so that both won't point at the same server. So name your POP3 server pop.whatever.org_or_com and your SMTP server mailhost.whatever.org_or_net_or_whatever and it should work with mutt.
