[SLE] cross-net smb + Icq on non-public IP
hi all, we have several subnets here and i'm supposed to implement a smbserver. Before the other subnet was connected everything went perfect. History: we have one smaller public IP network .96.114.x then a gateway was added to connect a non-public net to ours. a traceroute to one of the PCs: # traceroute 10.5.1.67 traceroute to 10.5.1.67 (10.5.1.67), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets 1 stw-de.stw.x.de (10.2.0.1) 10 ms 3 ms 2 ms 2 wh260.stw.x.de (10.5.1.67) 17 ms 6 ms 6 ms On my machine i can mount resources from that PC, if i specify the destination IP. The networks have different workgroup names. His machine(win98) though cant reach mine, he cant even see our workgroup, but, as said above, his machine can do a trace to mine and viceversa, and i can mount his stuff. Does anybody know the syntax for telling win98 how to connect to an IP. I tried: \\<IP> \\host.workgroup \\host\workgroup \\workgroup\host Could I export my netbios name to his network, so that my server appears in his workgroup? would i need to know, who the browsemaster is on that net? Other Prob: how could the winusers from the private net use ICQ? could they reroute their ICQ port to the machine with the public IP, say at port 10000? thanks already, Alex -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Hello Alex! I don't know the answers to all of your questions, but I'll take a stab at the one that stands-out the most to me. hello Mark, and all My interfaces(i have 2 netcards in the server, one being the publik one (publik.x.x.x), and the other one is serving my OWN private little 192.168. subnet containing only my workstation, but that is NOT the prob) are correctly setup, as is the rest of the samba setup on MY machine, but the other one from the 10.5. net cant figure out the syntax for connecting to mine... My machine is IN one of the nets, it is NOT the machine connecting the two nets , just in case you missunderstood me on that point Thanks though for the link to the online Samba Book greets, alex On Sun, 16 Apr 2000, Mark B Withers wrote:

From what I've read in "Using Samba", the one configuration option that stands out to me is the "interfaces" attribute.
interfaces = 192.168.220.100/255.255.255.0 \ 134.213.233.110/255.255.255.0
This option would cause the samba server to send data to more than one interface. Samba by default only listens to the primary network interface, so you have to specify if you wish it to listen to other ones. This is assuming that the samba server is the machine not sharing its resources with the newer ones on the new subnet you spoke of.
The "Using Samba by Robert Eckstein, David Collier-Brown and Peter Kelly" is freely available on the web at:
http://samba.he.net/using_samba/
If the site is searchable, just search for "interfaces" and it should take you where you wish to go.
Hope this helps!
Mark
