[opensuse] Google Earth can't find a shared library that IS present
I installed openSuSE v11.1 yesterday in a new partition, and have so far used only Firefox and some KDE apps. Just now I installed GoogleEarth v4.3, making no changes at all in the installation defaults. The installation finished successfully, and it left the GoogleEarth icon on the desktop. Clicking on the icon causes the bouncing cursor to bounce in an encouraging and convincing manner, but after a time that stops and GoogleEarth fails to load. Trying to load the program from a terminal brought a message telling me that the program is unable to find the library <libGL.so.1>. I found this file in: ./usr/lib64/libGL.so.1 How can I make this file available to Google Earth? -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Just a point of clarification, Google Earth is a 32-bit application, so you need the 32-bit version of LibGL. Stan's running the 64-bit version of this library. Stan, you probably need something like Mesa-32bit installed if you have Mesa installed. You are telling me that it wants a 32-bit version of this library? But I had already searched YaST for <libGL.so.1>, without reference to bus width, before I found the 64-bit version -- and found nothing. Is it possible to simply copy the 66-bit file to the 32-bit directory? If not, where am I to find the 32-bit library? -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No, it's of no use copying. libGL.so.1 is included Mesa-32bit-7.2-10.1 in openSuSE 11.1. HTH, Regards, --- Masaru Nomiya mail-to: nomiya @ galaxy.dti.ne.jp "Bill! You married with Computers. I must seem very dense. In what sense is "Mesa-32bit-7.2-10.1" included in openSuSE 11.1? If it is a file, it is not present in my system. If it is a package, YaST doesn't seem to know about it. On Yast2, search by "Mesa", then it will show "Mesa-32bit" (now it's version is 7.2.10.1). Google Earth requires this "Mesa-32bit" package. Thank you. I do find the package in YaST. When I try to Accept it, the <Software Management> window collapses. -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Do you not have an accelerated 3D graphics card or chipset and the required driver for it? If not and you're forced to use Mesa, you're not going to find Google Earth or any other 3D program very much fun to run because 3D rendering will be done on the system's main CPU, not on the graphics card's specialized rendering processors and that is far slower and eats into CPU cycles available to the application that needs to supply the 3D data to be rendered.

Thanks for these remark, the problem is for the first time becoming clear to me. The MB of this machine is Intel D915GAV; it does have a 32bit 3D graphics engine. The v11.1 My Computer screen describes the graphics system thus: Vendor: Tungsten Graphics Inc Model Mesa DRI Intel 915G 20080716 That description is new to me. The description in the v10.3 My Computer screen says only that it is 915G, with Intel Support. Is it possible that v11.1 is using an incorrect driver that is not supporting the capabilities of the display system? Or that the display system is not up to coping with GoogleEarth v4.3? -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
