Has anyone had any success using a linksys router for internet access with suse8? Scenario: ATTBI cablemodem access to the internet - hooked to a router (HPRO200), connected to my suse8 box with an Ethernet card. I just added the router in so that the rest of my PC's (XP, 2000) could also access the net. First: suse8 has internet access just fine if connected directly to the cable modem, before the router was inserted. Second: the other Win2000 and XP boxes see the internet just fine through the new router (using its dhcp server). No new cables to be tested. So - what do I need to change on suse8 config in order for it to see the router correctly for internet access? Is it an issue of removing dhcpd on suse8? A particular config file change? Have been messing around with yast2 for days - still cannot access internet with the router. Have been scouring the net, newsgroups for an answer, checked the suse and linksys sites through their support db's. No joy. I suspect it is a couple of minor config changes that I am missing. Thanks for any ideas, suggestions, thoughts, pointers to sites, etc... Rick Stiphout Aurora CO rstiphout@who.net

I would consider first making a static address in Suse. I have experienced problems on my home machine with Suse not getting an address by DHCP. If your router internal address is 192.168.1.1 then I would set the Suse box to use address: 192.168.1.2, set the gateway to 192.168.1.1 and then set the DNS to that of your ISP. To find out what address the router is handing out go to the Win boxes and at the command prompt type: ipconfig /all, this should show you what address they have. Note: if one of the Win boxes is using 192.168.1.2 select another address for the Suse box. Let me know if that works. -Scott

Are you getting an IP address from the Linksys? Type ifconfig at a prompt and your address should be similar to the others. -- (o< //\ Powered by SuSE Linux V_/_ Virusproof. Crashproof. 8:56am up 6 days, 9:41, 26 users, load average: 1.12, 1.22, 1.14 processes 559923
Yes, most certainly. I have 2 SuSE 8.0 laptops and a SuSE 7.3 desktop a Linksys wireless 4 port router and a Mortorola SB4100 cable modem to Attbi. I have not had any trouble with SuSE on this. The two laptops use dhcp and the desktop uses a static IP (because I allow port 22 access). My wife's Windows ME system is also online. When my daughter visits, she uses the wireless in her Mac laptop. On 8 Oct 2002 at 6:54, Rick Stiphout wrote:

I've been using the router since installing SuSE and haven't had to configure anything...the 'net fired up w/o a problem. One thing you might check is whether DHCP is turned on in SuSE which it must be. I know it seems kinda weird since the router has this too but I did shut it off once a couple of months back and there went my connection. Zach

I can't specifically answer your question, but I can tell you that the Linksys router works fine under Suse 8.0. The trick is, I had the router installed and working when I installed 8.0, and everything automagically works. The same, by the way, was true all the way back to 5.2 or so. (I think back then, I had to input some stuff, but I don't remember.) At 06:54 10/08/2002 -0600, Rick Stiphout wrote:

Thanks to all the folks who responded to my problem with the linksys router and Suse 8.0. Specifically - thanks to scott@scottah.com, Ed Harrison, Zach Smith, Robt. Miller, Doug McGarrett, and Jerry Feldman - who took the time to reply and get me on the right track. What finally worked was setting a static address for the suse box, gateway 192.168.1.1, and manually entering the dns servers from attbi. Was not able to get things going through dhcp in the Suse 8 yast2 config; tried many variations, many attempts. I even tried a reinstall of suse 8 with the new router up and running - was unable to get dhcp to automagically configure itself. Finally - the only way I can get suse 8 to work when I initially boot into it - is to run dhcpcd as root, once. After that, it works like a charm. So what is the best location in all the startup scripts, to put the dhcpcd command during initial startup of suse 8? With much appreciation to this group - Rick Stiphout Aurora Co rstiphout@who.net
