The large number of complaints about particular problems in 8.0 on listserv make me wonder whether there is doubt about the reliability of technical support at S.u.S.E. Is there such doubt? dj tuchler

dj tuchler not here. My setup is a little strange, but there weren't any problems that weren't either due to my not paying attention..(hey, it happens <g>) or general *gremlins* that are in all technology ... sometimes you're the windscreen, sometimes.. you're the bug ! However, 20 mins from sitdown to ready for the internet configuration ( including dsl ) is something I've not ever managed before .. no matter the OS.. ( maybe earlly DOS , but I've erased that bit of memory ... needed it for more important stuff... brain now operates on fifo <sigh>
I got the impression from this list that most people were very pleased with 8.0 installation. I know that so far as the basic installation went, mine was awesome. (Try installing Debian sometime if you want a contrast!) I'm having trouble with a PCMCIA network card on my laptop and SuSE 8, and some advanced topics like internet connection sharing and samba set-up that the free installation support doesn't cover has me stumped, but in my, albeit limited, experience SuSE 8.0 is the most painless linux installation in the history of linux. It will allow more Windows converts to easily partition their drive and give linux a try than any other linux distro has ever done before. (That's assuming they hear about how easy it is and are so inclined...) Dennis Tuchler wrote:

If you doubt SuSE's tech support because of the rants that are expressed here..that's just wrong. It's a flame war a week here.. *laugh* ..I don't think I've ever seen 100% satisfaction with anything software related ever. :) I've been playing with SuSE 8.0 for the last few days helping my Linux newbie officemate configure his 2nd workstation and I think it's damn slick. You will most likely have a good time with it..if you remember it's software created by humans for humans and nothing is 100% perfect. :) * Dennis Tuchler (dtuchler@earthlink.net) [020430 15:35]: ::The large number of complaints about particular problems in 8.0 on ::listserv make me wonder whether there is doubt about the reliability of ::technical support at S.u.S.E. :: ::Is there such doubt? -=Ben --=====-----=====-- mailto:ben@whack.org --=====-- If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little. -GC --=====-----=====--
Being a newbie and having upgraded from 7.3 to 8.0, I have to say that while a couple things have been trying, all around the attitude is good and the latest edition is very clean. I can only imagine...again because I'm a newbie...that with all the variables in Linux, things are going to go wrong here and there. But then again, I had the same number of issues after upgrading everyone's Win98 machine to Win2k here at the office. I'd like to put SuSe on all machines, but I don't have the patients to hold everyone's hand thru the learning stage. Lists are not for posting positive comments...we would like them to be, but realistically they're here for people that have problems. So if you judge a program by a group like this, then all you're going to hear is the downside. After a couple hours fixing some problems, my 8.0 works great. I have a couple more hours of tweaking, but that's OK. I think what we need to do is, for all those that have had an easy time with fresh installs or upgrades, speak out, if only to say...Works great! 2-cents. I think everyone needs to view these groups with an open mind. Whenever I review a new product, be it software, hardware, or any mix, I always look online in groups and such. I watch for the problems everyone lists, but I also like to see how many answers there are to the problems. There is going to be something not right with EVERYTHING made by humans (hmm, that seems to be all inclusive (-: so what you really need to look for is, was there a fix for the problem? And more importantly, does the manufacturer agree there is/was a problem? If the things people said they had a difficult time with had a corrective action more often than not, then everything should proceed fairly smoothly for you. Just my .02 cents. My impressions on 8 so far: The installation program wanted to write over my two FAT32 partitions, otherwise went well. Support could not answer my simple question as to if my particular modem is supported. From what I've read some winmodems are and some arn't, but dont ask support. They have no clue. 1. A phone call pong match proved silly when I was finally asked to submit my question via email. This fellow told me that support is farmed out to a third party. 2. My first email attempt the tech sent me links to independant sites on the subject. When I asked him to snswer the specific question or pass the email along to his supervisor I got no response. 3. In an effort to avoid that tech I then tried to open new calls to emails to both US and De support. I have yet to receive a reply. A simple "no" would have been a fine answer. I was not even told winmodems weren't supported in general! The fine print of the support policy states only serial external modems are supported. Read this, the scope is unbeleivably small. My memories of RH support a few years ago were much better. If I had known support would have been so limited and clueless I would have bought the Upgrade version and not been so generous with my monies. As to the software, WOW! My Linux, FreeBSD and even Windows buddies are as impressed as I am. KDE 3 is sweet and no one can beleive the beauty of the bootstrap loader. I think this varies. Once, a long time ago, I tried the SuSE support. I didn't really have a question, I just made up something plausibly "newbie-like" just to see what sort of response there was, and I got a fairly quick result. But as with most things I can imagine this depends on who you're in contact with. YMMV, as they say. Anders

Friend, the note you quoted had me contacting FOUR different entities and none could tell me my modem was: A. not supported in the shipped code B. not covered in their support contract I do wish SuSE well. From what I've seen the are a neat little company with their head on straight and I hope this is just a growing pain. Heck, perhaps their overwhelmed by terrific sales. I am willing to give some slack based on how cool so many other aspects are. Just hosting these lists and the fact that their employees participate in same is much more than most other companies do. So overall a "B" grade on support from me. (:-{)} Cheers, Bill
