RE: [SLE] Changing for LILO
When I purchased and installed SuSE 8.1 I was surprised to see GRUB instead of LILO but it seemed to be working quite well. Then I installed a new RAID controller to support a mirrored set of disks and needed to build and include modules to support the controller in my boot image. The manufacturer had detailed instructions on how to build the module and then add it to a LILO boot, but these instructions did not seem to apply to GRUB at all. Searching the newsgroups, FAQs, and other web resources did not yield any information on how to get this to work with SuSE's tools for working with GRUB either. Mostly by reading scripts, source code, and trial and error I was able to figure out the process on my own and get it working. The instructions that I came up with for adding a module to the GRUB boot were vastly simpler and quicker than the instructions I had for doing the same thing with LILO. (See "How to set up the HighPoint RocketRaid 404" in this list on 1/30/03) In summary, I can see why SuSE would decide to go with GRUB. I wish that they had gotten some of the needed documentation together before they made the change, as it could have saved me several days of trouble. Grant Q

Most likely because Redhat and Mandrake both use GRUB as well. It seems that the 3 majors are at least trying to make the user experience as close as possible across the board. Most companies are slow to change .. I have people in my office that still seems surprized that Linux has a GUI. ;) If you post the URL that your working off for lilo. I'm sure someone here can hip you to how you can do it with GRUB. It can't be all that difficult. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe..
