[opensuse] why not openSUSE used grub 2?

hi, Why openSUSE is not using grub 2 by default? I am just asking for information point of view, don't want to get into the flames. Thanks. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Oh I see, but the best part I liked is that openSUSE consists of highly and thoroughly tested softwares and apps and that's what I like! Grub 2 is not yet implemented -- is not an issue, I was just asking about why. Okay but in the coming time after all things....it would be there. It is an issue for people with disks bigger than 2TiB. We are recommending them to at least install Ubuntu in another partition, and use it to boot openSUSE. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. I hope that we would be implementing Grub 2 in the coming 2-3 years.
By then maybe Grub2 will be mature enough to make sense in the openSUSE scheme of things, and for openSUSE packagers to understand it well enough to incorporate it into all the different packages it impacts and is impacted by. Meanwhile, there are other FOSS bootloaders. Not only is there Lilo, but others like AiR-Boot, which might turn out to be better than Lilo, Grub Legacy or Grub2 if given a chance. And yes don't forget that those who created Grub Legacy were programmers and thus was made suse.
Your logic has a big hole. The first openSUSE release was in September 2005. Previous to that was SuSE (last 9.3), which was not openly developed. Grub Legacy predates 10.0 by years. Instead of spending so much time continuing this thread, why not devote that time to learning Grub2 so that you can contribute to its incorporation in the modules that will need to be updated in order to make it default? -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." True and I start that. Felix, you are matured Linux guy, I mean you know Linux, so let's start! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Or use lilo ...
Has lilo improved during this time, and it can handle those big disks that legacy grub can't? That's interesting. But anyway, it is not set up automatically by YaST, so it is not really an option except for experts. Pity we dropped lilo, then. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. It was only a real problem way back when lilo was limited to the first 1024 cylinders, but I upgraded lilo a couple of months ago. 12.1 has lilo 23.2 which brought quite a few improvements (unrelated to disk-size).
We default to grub, but the option to use lilo is still there. The yast module for configuring it needs updating though. Maybe I'll do that too one of these days. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (7.6°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Lilo is part of openSUSE 12.1 as it had been before. It's also possible to switch the used bootloader from inside the YaST bootloader module. Might be better to check and use a current release before fud-ing? Expected reply: "No, no, no, my care, bike, three wheeler, nose poking device had been non working the last time and therefore I had not been able to install 12.1 on a real system. Also the weather had been this shitty and it's so cold outside. Therefore I was less motivated. But my complaining device still works well." Reply: Well, then please consider to save us from such unproductive and openSUSE blaming commnts. They simply draw a wrong and even bad picture. I'm not fudding. I remember the discussion here when it was decided to drop lilo. Yes, the package can be installed, but the configuration section was reported dropped from yast bootloader code. It is in the mail archive. I have not really checked, I just believed what the maintainers said here. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
