[opensuse] Simple mail server
We need a simple mailserver: POP3, IMAP, Simple web interface for off-site reading. Simple Web interface config (our Win IT guy must be able to use it :) Active Directory integration (not a deal-breaker, but again the Win IT guy will love to have it) I like Zimbra, but its a bit bulky and they decided to drop support for OpenSUSE in the future. Others looked at but either to complex to maintain or no useful config interfaces: KoLab, Scalix, OpenXchange, eGroupware Did I miss some? Im sure I did. Axigen - http://www.axigen.com I downloaded it and obtained a registration key with the intention of trying it out but never got around to it. There was a review in Linux Format mag a few months back (which may be downloadable from their web site (www.linuxformat.co.uk). HTH. Looks like a solid product, unfortunately for that pricing the IT guy is just going to buy and install Small Office Edition. Needs to be cheap. Seems that Webmin, Usermin and Postfix might do the job? Anyone have some pointers? Postfix is rock solid, and pretty much the default in Opensuse. I like cyrus-imap for 2 reasons, its easy to set up in opensuse, and it scales to very large systems. Supports quotas (size limits) too. I've been meaning to set up web-cyradm to administer, but haven't gotten around to that yet. That gives you a web interface to administer users, groups, domains etc. Different admins can administer different domains (on the same server) with that setup. Don't have any idea about active directory integration. Jim F -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Another vote for Postfix Cyrus. (Or Postfix, Amavis Cyrus). The neat thing about Cyrus is there is a feature you can use to pre-define defaults, quotas, etc. and have the system automatically create the mailbox when the admin simply sends an email to a new user. The only tricky bit is setting up SECURE imap and this has been included in yast in recent releases. There is simply no reason to even install pop3 any more once you get secure imap and secure postfix working correctly. This can all be done on a rather modest box. But if you use SLES its all done for you. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Manne, Sorry to late getting back, but I have been on a "family trip" which is entirely different from a "vacation", especially when it requires a 14 hour drive each way.... For you mail server, why not squirrelmail? Version 1.4 is stable, the truck version (1.5) from svn is really stable as well. I run it, it's light weight, and with postfix underneath it is bulletproof. I've run squirrelmail for 7 years or so and I can count on 2 fingers the number of times the trunk version has had a bad update, and, in each occasion, a quick e-mail to Paul Lewenski (the maintainer) had a patch in less than an hour. I can't say enough about eGroupWare either. Version 1.6 is out and it is fabulous. I have run my practice on egw for the past 4-5 years ever since Version 1.0. It is a complete groupware package with all of the normal calendar, contacts, etc.. plus project manager, knowledge base, time-sheet, wiki and more... (all stored in a MySQL backend) The mailer is going through an upgrade as we speak. There is also another mail package called Roundcube that looks great. I haven't run it, but I have looked at it closely. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. I like RoundCube. My webhoster uses RoundCube as default and I like the design and speed and functions. But I really don't like Squirrelmail, I'm sorry to say. It's way to simple and text only. The basic Gmail HTML interface looks better. They need to make it look better. Plus, in Squirrelmail (I've used it before), when you have a lot of messages, it loads very slow.
