Whoa! I figured it would be a bit more expensive this time around... But not double the cost (even at Chumbo no less...). I doesn't seem to me you're getting that much more (i.e. more than in 6.4) for the extra cost. I would want more that the Personal edition (and I like getting the full manual), but I don't need the dvd. I don't have one, and don't know anyone who does...... Up through 6.4 I never even had to think about whether or not to buy the next incremental version, but not any more. Still, I'll wait 'till it crops up in CompUSA and see what their price is, but right now it doesn't look encouraging. Hmmm, It seems like a ploy to hit custoemrs for more money. They just raised the price for what is basicly the same as 6.4 to make a deluxe package , and then trimmed it down to create a standard one at a cheaper price with only three cds. I was more than willing to spring $29.99 for each new incremental version and heve been since 5.3 I will not be able to continue this pattern at $59.99 (www.chumbo.com) a pop. On top of that I still dont have a dvd either. It looks like I may just wait and see how stable 7.0 and may even wait for 7.1. packages, any DVD user would desire to avoid a 6CD installation.

So, overall SuSE 7.0 adds a DVD (a cheap piece of plastic), and some more support, and now costs 30 bucks more? Before I go on, I should ask, was Chumbo one of the retailers that sold 6.x for $20-$30, or where they always more? I have to admit $54 sounds like a lot of money for a minor upgrade, and yet it is nice to get the manual. Seems to me, you'd manage just as well with a shorter support period and the manual (like it is now) than longer support period and no-manual (like the upgrade version). While I really like SuSE, but with the heated competition from those such as Mandrake (which also offers a wide variety of packages in their Deluxe version), it seems SuSE has eliminated one of it's major distinctive - bargain basement pricing on a full good-as-it-gets distro. Since I started using Linux, I've seen RedHat and Caldera (along with newer distros) all switch to expensive pricing systems (which bring upgrading a Linux system close to the cost of Win 98 upgrade) - this certainly doesn't seem to be a good precedent. It seems like the majority of those hear agree... I hope maybe SuSE will listen and consider releasing a version with the same support that 6.4 had - and the same price tag. I'd probably pass up the pro (and of course the pro-upgrade) and go for the kind we've been using and enjoying. I don't want to sound like I'm nagging, it just seems like a "one step forward, two steps backward" kinda thing, especially placing a program that gets updated every three months (SuSE) in the same price range as one that comes out no more than once a year (Windows 9x/ME Upgrade Edition, which is also all developed in-house, along with compiled, vs. just being compiled in house, like a Linux distro). Sorry... I quit ranting now. Don't mind me - I'll keep buying SuSE either way.... -Tim ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. No, just three times a year, not four times...
than once a year (Windows 9x/ME Upgrade Edition, which is also all developed in-house, along with compiled, vs. just being compiled in house, like a Linux distro).
That is a joke, right? Yes, By far most of development is done by people on the Internet. This is why you can get a full blown OS plus 1500 packages for $39 from a company that does not sell 100 million copies (Microsoft has economies of scale on its side). MS also has far, far fewer apps than we have! Still, the development effort for a Linux distribution is enormous. This includes that much of the stuff done ealier for free by volunteers is now done for lots of money paid by the Linux companies. Many of the glibc and kernel hackers, for example, work for a Linux company these days (and we got quite a few of them!).

Michael, it looks like this thread has a self-propellant force. People see the announcement and pricing on the web site and jump to conclusions. Unfortunately they don't read your previous posts on the pricing and the update version and dump their complaint to the newsgroup. Would it be possible to add a FAQ on thos to the US web site? Or perhaps even better, include an official statement about the upgrade version there? Hi all, I have to agree with Bobby regarding Michael's patience. Bravo - Michael... I think that offering the distribution in 3 different forms certainly provides the market adequate choice. IMHO, SuSE offers exceptional value-for-money, and, quite honestly, 2 distinct camps are emerging from these discussions: 1. Serious users - where features & support dominate; 2. Casual users - where price dominates. In other words, SuSE have actually made a very good business call... it should allow them to still provide value-for-money for each distinct group. IMHO, it is really not about the price of purchasing the CD-roms that is important - rather, I am paying for all the unseen background work and testing being performed by SuSE in order to bring us stable distributions. Has anyone ever stopped to think, for a moment, what level of complexity lies in getting all the many applications to load & run in a stable manner, and set up a neutral kernel, and additional kernel options... it must be an absolute nightmare... SuSE deserve every $ they earn... I have been on the receiving end of other distributions where this level of testing had obviously not been done - the end result is most often frustration on the part of the serious user... I honestly think that SuSE has done the right thing, and will continue to support them (and the programmers supported by them) by purchasing the full professional edition, on an ongoing basis... I already believe that their value-for-money far, far outperforms any product MS$ every had to offer... Best regards, Des Aubery... Hi Michael, I really appreciate you taking time to answer all these concerns from us. Also, I think you have made your point about the upgrade edition. I think that is the way to go for most of us. All SuSE needs to do now is to announce it and the price on their website. That would save you a lot of time here :) Earlier, I was not happy with what SuSE did with 7.0 but now that we have the option of this so called "upgrade" edition, I think I am satisfied. If it had a full vmware license it would have to be significantly more expensive, or vmware (the company) would suddenly have a competing channel for its product which is less expensive then its other channels. The last time I checked (20 seconds ago) their price was $299 minimum. It means people would buy SuSE Linux from now on even if they really just want vmware. Sure, would be great for us, but I don't think the head of sales at vmware agrees. -- Michael Hasenstein http://www.suse.de/~mha/ SuSE Linux AG, Nuernberg (Germany) SuSE Inc., Oakland, California (US) -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
