[opensuse] What happened to Aramok?

There was a thread about it about a month ago. It is in risk of disappearance. [opensuse-kde] KDE4/Qt4 removal from openSUSE Factory Amarok uses that, has not been ported to KF5/Qt5, so it will disappear eventually. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.0 x86_64 at Telcontar)

Amarok uses that, has not been ported to KF5/Qt5, so it will disappear eventually.
Amarok version 2.9.70 is now built against KF5 (available for TW in KDE Extra), so I'm guessing that it will be around for a while longer once that hits the release repos. Not sure why - working for me here on TW...except that the equalizer function has no effect (but that's hardly a showstopper). -- ============================================================== Rodney Baker VK5ZTV rodney.baker@iinet.net.au CCNA #CSCO12880208 ==============================================================

Make sure in YaST that "install recommends" is enabled (dependencies menu). Then select the packman repo, and click on "Switch system packages to the versions in this repository". Proceed. Agreed. I'm using the VLC backend for Phonon here instead of Gstreamer, and it "just works". I don't know if that's relevant or not. You can check which backend is being used by KDE by default using "System Settings -> Multimedia -> Audio & Video -> Backend. If you can, try selecting the VLC backend and test. (If it is not installed, you might try installing the VLC backend as a test. You can have both installed and set the preference through the above screen). Not suggesting that will fix it necessarily, but it seems like a key point of difference. YMMV. BTW, I just realised that the method suggested by Carlos above takes you to exactly the same setup screen, so either way is valid. -- ============================================================== Rodney Baker VK5ZTV rodney.baker@iinet.net.au CCNA #CSCO12880208 ============================================================== -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

That sounds good. Did you have to do anything special? By opening the audio cd device, I had expected to get an automatic playlist, then auto-start at track1.

Must be operator error. I have amarok running, icon in the tray. I pop in a CD, nothing happens. Before installing amarok it would ask if I wanted open with vlc or file manager. They are very different things. Kaffeine is a just a player. I seldom use my cd-player for music, because of the noise it makes. (I rip them all and play flac.) But it does work. Either way, it doesn't work and I don't know how to fix it.
Be sure to check:
* Amarok -> Settings -> Configure Amarok -> Playback -> Configure Phonon
* installed codecs (gstreamer-plugins: bad & ugly) all from packman
Added packman repo, tried reinstalling Amarok and still doesn't work. Gstreamer is installed.
Perhaps I'm missing something, but it shouldn't be so hard to get a package working. I have been using Amarok for years and never that this problem.

Yes, text attachments do :-) I don't see big problems, but three things to correct. Repo number 2 and 15 are the same, so remove number 2, "openSUSE:Leap:15.1:Update". Repo number 4 and 6 are the same (packman). Remove one. If you are curious, do: ls -ltr /etc/zypp/repos.d/ And see if some of the dates correspond to the day you used one click. Then there is a suspicious one, but may be intentional: "KDE:Extra". Do you really need it? I see it contains Amarok. But the standard OSS repo also contain Amarok, so you are probably using a different version than the people in the thread, and might explain why it works for others and not for you. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. guessing, but you have probably installed and gained the repos by using the "one-click-install" that others dislike and paid no attention the the instructions the "one-click-install" provides, one of which is to add the repo, or not. so, yes, it is something you *decided* to have installed, ie: was manually installed. you made that choice, either by not reading or ignoring. you need to remove the repos which do not match your openSUSE version and probably KDE:Extra since you *apparently* should not be using bleeding-edge versions. uninstall amarok. then search for amarok and install the version meant for your Leap 15.1. yast should be sufficient for your purposes. I'm getting really tired of repeating myself here. As I have said on a couple of occasions, Yast did NOT provide it. I had to go and search. When I search on "opensuse leap 15.1 amarok repository" I get the link "https://software.opensuse.org/download.html?project=KDE%3AExtra&package=amarok", which provides the git version. Why is this happening??? What else am I supposed to search on??? What is the URL for the proper repository, so that I can manually add it? The link Per provided is for the Tumbleweed version. Where is the proper repository for amarok on openSUSE Leap 15.1??? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Thank you for being insulting. I have been following instructions. In the past, it was in Yast. It wasn't this time and that was the first thing I checked. Searching on what should have been the correct terms got me the git version The link from Per was the Tumbleweed version After more searching, I found http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/leap/15.1/repo/oss/. After digging down, I found this link, which I hope is the correct one: http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/leap/15.1/repo/oss/x86_64/, where I found the rpm Now, from the top, this was a fresh install and a Yast search did not provide the app. A search on the correct terms gave me the git version. (one click) Per gave me the Tumbleweed version. (one click) I did not manually add any repo. The repo I found provided an RPM, which installed with Install/Remove software. Software management does not show any mention of git or Tumbleweed. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

why do you have "Factory" repositories? they are not Leap 15.1 and are mostly/usually not compatible. they are not Leap 15.1 just as Tumbleweed and Leap 14 and debian are not. you cause yourself much problems by not following procedure.
your "installed" amarok package is not intended for Leap 15.1 and is not from git and/or KDE:Extra as you described. it is from "Factory".
openSUSE:Factory /= Leap 15.1 openSUSE:Factory /= Tumbleweed openSUSE:Factory /= git
It appears that factory came in with the Tumbleweed version. I have had both git and Tumbleweed installed, at one time or other, trying to find the appropriate version. I would *REALLY* like to know where to find it, as no matter what I do, I wind up with the wrong version.
Again, this is on a fresh install of 15.1 and I have not manually added repos. If one's in the list, it's because something I installed added it.

That's the point I've been making. I wind up on one click sites that install the wrong thing. Is there a correct one click version? Just don't use one click. It is a source of problems. Do the search, then manually add the repo.

the "one-click-installs" are *only* wrong when you give it incorrect information. there is absolutely nothing wrong with one-click-installs if you give correct information and follow directions. anyone can screw up anything if they do it wrong thru inattentiveness, lazyness or stupidy, with *any* install procedure. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Do you know if there is a bug report for this behaviour? It is clearly undesirable (maybe wrong) so it should be bug-reported. I haven't used it in many years. It is a problem with texts or default options, maybe not having clear what will happen with each route. People choosing the wrong option. Not exactly a bug. Patrick doesn't seem to have a problem with it. Yet many people find themselves in trouble... I believe it gives a choice for adding the repo or not. Maybe also to not install but just add the repo. The problem is also clicking on the right choice on the search page, which was the issue here. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.0 x86_64 at Telcontar)

why bug-report something that is doing what you tell it to? an app is not buggy becasue one does not pay attention to what they are doing or does not follow instructions. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

it is not rocket science, it is linux.
Here's what the page you link to shows: "Media Player for KDE Amarok is a media player for all kinds of media. This includes MP3, Ogg Vorbis, audio CDs, podcasts and streams. Play lists can be stored in .m3u or .pls files. Version 2.9.0 Size 5.81 MB openSUSE Tumbleweed" Unless I'm misreading that, it says Tumbleweed. On the other hand, the link I provided gives a choice of distro, but provided the git version. Regardless, I installed that "Tumbleweed" one and it appears to be OK so far, in that those annoying popups are gone. I'll have to see if it plays without stopping on it's own . -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Pardon me for being stupid, but how did I fail to properly utilize the application, when I entered amarok in that search box??? On top of that, the other link you provided, the one directly to the app produced the same results. When I do that, I still get: "Version 2.9.0 Size 5.81 MB openSUSE Tumbleweed" Now either I'm incredibly stupid or that link will get me the Tumbleweed version. Look at the search bar. At the left of the search bard, what does it say? It should say "openSUSE Leap 15.1" or "All distributions". Does it say "Tumbleweed"? Click and change it.

Ah. Click on the button below "show amarok for other distributions". Et voilá! Next time, do: pngquant Screenshot_20190531_142003.png Produces a much smaller png file. Yes, and in this case the git version is based on KDE Frameworks 5.58, whereas version 2.9.0 in the Main repo is still based on KDE 4.14, and will be dropped with support for KDE4 libraries (recently being discussed on the Factory list). -- ============================================================== Rodney Baker VK5ZTV rodney.baker@iinet.net.au CCNA #CSCO12880208 ============================================================== -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Sure. But that is of no consequence for Leap. At that point, the entire Leap will have to switch. Hopefully that should happen at the release of 15.2 or 15.3, so be thoroughly tested. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.0 x86_64 at Telcontar)
