Couldn't install SuSE8 (ftp version) to Dell Opt Gx240
Hi, Today (night actually), I tried to install SuSE 8 (ftp version) to Dell Opt Gx240 at my lab, but fail. The machine spec is: - P4 1.6 Ghz - 256 RAM - ATI Rage 32 MB - HD Maxtor 6L020L1 20 Ghz, ATA 100 - CD ROM, Zip drive, floppy disk My hardisk structure is: hda1: Primary partition, NTFS (Windows Xp), about 7 GB hda2: Empty primary partition, this will be the mount point "/". Size is about 3 GB. hda3: Extended partition. Size is about 8 GB. During installation, this is displayed as "Win95 Extended (LBA)" (or something similar). hda4: Empty logical partition, this will be "/home". Size is about 3 GB. hda5: FAT32, this is where SuSE installation sources reside (D:\installer\suse8). Size is about 4 GB. hda6: Linux swap partition. Size is 1 GB. The installation steps: 1. Boot from bootdisk. 2. Load additional filesystem modules from module disk 1 (NTFS module). 3. Chose "manual installation". 4. When "choose installation media", chose "hardisk", then selected "hda5". 5. A dialog box asking for directory where installation sources reside, I filled with "/installer/suse8" (without double-quotes of course) 6. The installer performed automatic detection, all hardware are detected (zip drive, usb mouse). 7. A page appear, listing a number of possible customization (partition, where to install lilo, etc). 8. I chose "partitioin": the default/detected by SuSE installer was: format hda6 as swap. format hda4 as reiserfs, and mount to "/". mount hda1 to "/windows/C" mount hda5 to "/windows/D" 9. I modified the partition setting as following: a. format hda2 as reiserfs, and mount to "/" b. format hda4 as reiserfs, and mount to "/home". 10. Proceed with installation. The installer format the necessary partition. 11. And then, I got 2 similar error messages: a. Could not mount partition /dev/hda2 to /mnt/" (continue, abort, retry). b. Pressing "retry" will only repeat the error messages, so I chose "continue" 12. Then the following error message: a. "Could not mount partition /dev/hda5 to /mnt/windows/D" (cont, abort, retry) b. Pressing "retry" will only repeat the error messages, so I chose "continue" 13. After that, I was brought to the first page of installation again -- the text mode one with options such as: Boot/Exit, Power Off, Start Installation, etc etc. At step 8, I have tried to make installer not to mount hda1 to "/windows/C" and hda5 to "/windows/D", but I still got the similar error. I've also tried to format hda2 and hda4 with both ext2 or ext3, but still failed. I wonder what could be wrong? Do I need to change the partition structure (which is unlikely, cause there's already Windows XP)? Any help would be appreciated. Hi Verdi. I honestly don't believe it is the partitioning, I have a hd configuration different from yours but the error is "exactly" the same. I do believe it is a YAst2 problem, that doesn't allow changing the source medium from CD to hd or other...I'm frustrated about it as well, but so far no light in the end of the tunnel yet. I've reread your initial message. As you said earlier, "... I think I remembered it correctly ...", perhaps you did remember it almost correctly ;-) But the cause of the mounting problem is /windows/D. Retry the installation, but in the partitioner do not add /windows/D to the list. YasT will then not try to mount that partition, and installation will go on. Later on, after the installation, you can add that partition manually to your /etc/fstab. Leen

You're right Leen, that the logical partition should start from hda5. Anyway, today I tried to choose "Safe installation", still no hope. I still got the message "could not mount hda2 to "/mnt/". Then I tried to alter my partition setting (note: I 'repartition' using partition magic 7, similar with what I did with my laptop when I installed 7.2 successfully) to: hda1: 1st primary, NTFS, 8 GB. hda2: 2nd primary, ext2, about 8 MB, this will be the "/boot". hda3: Win95 Extended (LBA), about 10 GB. hda4: ext2, this will be the "/", about 3 GB hda5: Win95 FAT32, installation source reside at "/installer/suse8", about 4 GB. hda6: ext2, this will be the "/home", about 3 GB. hda7: swap, about 512 MB. Within YaST, I reformat hda2, hda4, hda6 with ext2 and hda7 with swap. The format went smoothly, and with this setting, I didn't get the error message anymore. BUT, when proceeding to the next screen (I think it supposes to be package installation, because I can see several empty GUI panel), YaST return to the first screen (the textmode screen, with options such as "power off", "boot/exit", "start install", etc). Well, there's an 8 GB partition in front of it. So huge that I silently wonder if that could be the cause... but I'm no expert. I'll try later if I can find something on this.
Then I tried to alter my partition setting (note: I 'repartition' using partition magic 7, similar with what I did with my laptop when I installed 7.2 successfully) to: hda1: 1st primary, NTFS, 8 GB. hda2: 2nd primary, ext2, about 8 MB, this will be the "/boot". hda3: Win95 Extended (LBA), about 10 GB. hda4: ext2, this will be the "/", about 3 GB

Any error message on <Alt>-<F1..F12>? That is strange behaviour. Bug? Broken package? What I always do after downloading a source tree (8.0) is find every MD5SUMS file, and check the files in the containing directory with md5sum -c MD5SUMS. Last time I had to re-download 2 packages. Are you sure that your source tree is healthy? And that you downloaded everything below i386/8.0/ (except the sources in zq1)?

Well, I trust LILO better than Windows, but out of convenience I've installed grub on the MBR to boot winXP (very rare ;-) or SuSE 7.3/8.0. It's convenient because I don't have to run LILO every time I install a new kernel or change lilo.conf. Grub doesn't care, as long as the files it needs are in the directory where it expects them. Hi, Finally, I manage to install SuSE8 on this machine by using ftp instead of harddisk. However, this is far from finished article. Each time I need to boot from safe setting, otherwise it will hang at certain point (notably when loading/detecting usb-storage). I haven't experiment with each safe parameter (nodma, apm, or acpi), but judging from others experience, I suspect the problem is the acpi. Another problem is that perl interpreter is unavailable. I've chosen the perl package during installation slection. However, during installation, I got twice a message that "y2xfer.rpm could not be found/accessed". I have search in ARCHIVES.gz, INDEX.gz, or ls-lR.gz (zgrep y2xfer <...>) but no result. The immediate effect is that I can't run sax2. I've tried executing "perl" directly from bash shell, and I got "command not found". I haven't tried to locate or find it yet, as I was in hurry to go back. The last problem is that I could not power off the PC without pressing the button. Note that I've boot using safemode kernel (ide=nodma, apm=off, acpi=off). Any suggestions? It only marks for install/upgrade the patches for packages actually installed on your system.
