SuSE flamed - Stop the Linux kernel madness
The President of Opensound on SuSE's kernels, no responses so far, but I expect flaming fur to fly. As I've posted here on a few occasions, the first thing I do after a SuSE install is to bin the kernel. http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0406.2/0530.html Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Ok. They edit setup.S. This doesn't change APIs.

A little later in the thread there's a specific compile error. Turns out, 4front are populated by people who don't know anything about compiling kernels. And they ship kernel level drivers. Good one, but the laugh's on them

Once alsa had been part of the 2.6 kernel, I stopped using OSS. They've been shipping OSS for many years, you'd think they would know all there is to know. Looks like Andrew Morton was the only cool head around, he first suggested it could be a kernel bug. I think the guy flipped after 7 years of having to mod the driver only for SuSE kernels. You would, wouldn't you. But the compile error he points to is pure newbie stuff

They claim to be kernel developers and use the /usr/include header files to compile kernel modules and not /lib/modules/<version>/source/... ? Nothing more to say ... Naughty, the kernel developers moved away from using those headers ages ago, all for the better as they caused problems in some situations. The best idea was the common kernel which SuSE was developing on behalf of most of the distros, except RedHat and Mandrake who had religeous objections. I wish the distros would cooperate more as for one thing the kernel developers would have more certainty. In an article it mentioned that with the switch to Linux, the Hollywood studios were working together rather than competing and if the distros did the same on kernel issues, I'm sure no one would switch from their favourite distro. It's a nuisance, I've come across source RPMs for RedHat's latest that won't build on SuSE, though that's more of an applications issue, gone are the days when I could grab a .deb or .rpm from anywhere, install it and run it successfully. So far 16 flames (some white hot) in the direction of Opensound by kernel developers. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer ===== LINUX ONLY USED HERE =====

"bin the kernel"?? Is that English slang for 'stuff it'? If so, I do the same thing.... (currently running 2.6.7 on 9.0 and 9.1)

bin as in garbage bin as in trash can

I don't. I liek the fact that SuSe's kernel supports much moe hardware then
the kernel.org kernel.
SuSE 9.0 was (for a long time) the only distro that worked out of the box
on a large variety of Dell laptops.
I have not yet encountered any software that failed to work with suses
kernel . In fact, kdebluetooth caould be compiled and run on a suse 9
system without the need of having to go out and imply custom patches to
standard kernels ;)
Of course, the 4front problem should be fixed (and will liekly be fixed
soon ;) )

Yes, its bin as in dustbin, dump, etc. colloquially. With 9.1 I had problems with sound on both x86 and x86_64, the kernel.org kernels have been fine. The Acer 1501LCe laptop caused a few jitters when I booted 9.0 x86_64 for the first time, I had difficulties with the bcm5788 ethernet stalling (wrong driver loaded), sound, usb mouse, CD-RW/DVD and card slot not working until I installed the latest 2.6.x kernel.org kernel. I also had a few problems with the built-in components on the Asus A7N8X-E motherboard, all ironed out with kernel.org kernels. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ....
