Hi, is there any possibility to burn only one (or a boot-iso?) of the 4 iso-images on a cd, and install suse, the other iso-images mounted on loopback-devices so that i don't have to burn all of them? I don't know, if that's really possible. I read someone on the german suse-linux - mailinglist mentioning, that he did it with the SuSE-beta-ISOs (must have been a beta-tester), but i don't find the thread anymore. Considering, that there will be Delta-isos soon, so that we have to burn the 4 CDs again, to update our system, it might be useful, to think of something like that. Greets Soeren, still downloading the first isos PS: sorry for my bad english...

Well I recently read an article on Novell which may be related: http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/8973.html -- Shriramana Sharma http://samvit.org
You could do that. Install minimum from cd1 and then after installation set the others as local source, with loopback mounted ISOs. The other point I would like to bring is that as 9.3 (and olders) the installation cd had the option to install pointing an hd partition (passing partition and /path/to/cd1), but I couldnt find a way to do this in 10bs installer. Also, couldnt see in the grub installer an option to go to linuxrc ("manual installation"), so you would only get to linuxrc if you pass wrong installation parameter or cancel/abort during the graphical installer part. Could anybody tell why this? If it was really removed, if its broken, if it will be ok in next releases? Should I fill a bug? Thanks Marcio H. As far as I know installing out of a directory was removed, but it is still possible to copy the content of the CDs into one partition and use it as an installation source. However, this is broken in beta1 but fixed for beta2. Regards Christoph
Well, I thought it was broken, since in linuxrc there is still an option "hd installation", although it asks for a partition and then to configure network, someway weird heh. Could this feature be re-added? It is neat, and its a fast wy to reinstall... Also, will manual installation be in the grub menu? So we could go directly to linuxrc, when needing to add some net module or some similar problem? Thanks for the info Márcio H. Ferreira On 8/12/05, Christoph Thiel <cthiel@suse.de> wrote:

I was referring to that option in linuxrc. It is enabled but broken in beta1. Regards Christoph

Now i did so.. and it worked. But when i added the mounted isos N° 2, 3, 4, i got a message: "No package information avaiable". And now, i can't refresh them. When i install software, i get a message like that: "installation source not refreshed". Is there something not ok with the CDs (md5-sums fo the iso are OK)? Greets Soeren

Try mounting the ISOs to /somewhere/CD1, /somewhere/CD2, /somewhere/CD3 and /somewhere/CD4 and point YaST to use /somewhere as installation source. It should walk through the CD1...CD4 directories automatically. (Installation source should be dir:///somewhere IIRC) Regards, Christian Boltz -- 2.-5.9.2005: Weinfest in Insheim Bei der Landjugend: Liquid, AH-Band und Deafen Goblins Mehr Infos: www.Landjugend-Insheim.de

Did you edit the fstab? (I'm not sure it is necessary, but you could try it. Simon Crute advised me the following line to be added to fstab: /dev/sda9/cd1.iso /installcds/1 auto loop,ro 0 0

I have the same problem with the beta 1, it is impossible to add an installation source of the DVD (haven't tried the CDs), in the YaST log file I can see it tries to find YUM installation sources and traditionan CD/DVD installation sources, but fails without finding anything. I'll debug it when I get the time (unless someone else solves it first :)

No, not wrong, just obsolete. greet as a noun synonym to greeting is an archaic form

Yes.. i did that: Here is a abridgement of my fstab: /dev/hda1 /mnt/suse93 auto noauto,user 0 0 # installations-isos /mnt/suse93/home/soeren/temp/SUSE-10.0-CD-OSS-i386-Beta1-CD4.iso /mnt/installationsquellen/CD4 auto loop,ro 0 0 /mnt/suse93/home/soeren/temp/SUSE-10.0-CD-OSS-i386-Beta1-CD3.iso /mnt/installationsquellen/CD3 auto loop,ro 0 0 /mnt/suse93/home/soeren/temp/SUSE-10.0-CD-OSS-i386-Beta1-CD2.iso /mnt/installationsquellen/CD2 auto loop,ro 0 0 /mnt/suse93/home/soeren/temp/SUSE-10.0-CD-OSS-i386-Beta1-CD1.iso /mnt/installationsquellen/CD1 auto loop,ro 0 0 I think, it's ok so. regards, Soeren

Try to point YaST to dir:///mnt/installationsquellen/CD1 instead of dir:///mnt/installationsquellen as I recommended some days ago. (I'm not sure which of the variants is correct, but one of them should do the job ;-) Regards, Christian Boltz -- 2.-5.9.2005: Weinfest in Insheim Bei der Landjugend: Liquid, AH-Band und Deafen Goblins Mehr Infos: www.Landjugend-Insheim.de

Pardon my ignorance, but what options do I need to include in /etc/fstab to mount an ISO image as an accessible read device? I suspect there will be a ro in it somewhere, right? /dev/sda9/cd1.iso /installcds/1 ??? ???,ro 0 0 -- Shriramana Sharma http://samvit.org

This won't work... /path/to/cd1.iso /installcds/CD1 auto auto, loop 0 0 ^^^ See my other mail about loopback-mounting yesterday for the "CD1".."CD4" path component. One more: If you have an encrypted partition in /etc/cryptotab, assign a higher-numbered loop device to it. The fstab entries will use the first available loop devices. (As an alternative, use "auto,loop=/dev/loop5" in fstab if you don't want to change your cryptotab.)
