[S.u.S.E. Linux] I lost my O.S SuSe 5.2 !
Hi Susers ! I have installed KDE 1 from suse ftp site using : rpm -i ksupp.rpm rpm -i klib... rpm -i kbase.rpm rpm -i others and not the one named ''kdir.rpm'' because it was not listed in the CD's distribution SuSe 5.2. now I am in a real troubles : I can't even start the SuSe 5.2 O.S, The guy who construct my PC and installed NT, SuSe 5.2, and I think a small part of DOS, configure this in a way I can slect the NT or SUSE 5.2. Now when I select SUSE 5.2, I get : LIL...- and no thing else for nearly 1/2 an hour. How can I desinstall KDE 1 and recover some thing, If some one could help, I would appreciate. Howdy, I probably don't know what I'm talking about because I picked up this thread in the middle, but I had a similar problem with a currupt master boot record on my primary harddrive. The solution was to fdisk the /mbr and then rerun /sbin/lilo. Bob Utter On Thu, 13 Aug 1998, Hubert Mantel wrote:

From the LILO docu:
LIL- The descriptor table is corrupt. This can either be caused by a geometry mismatch or by moving /boot/map without running the map installer.
Do you have by any chance moved/copied/deleted the file /boot/map?
Download some bootdisk from ftp.suse.com and boot your installed system. Then just run "lilo" and things should work fine again.

Oops a little problem..... But this has nothing to do with KDE 1.0!!!! Because they don't manipulate your lilo (It isn'y Microsoft!!!!). What probably happend is that: You went into your BIOS, and did a auto-sence for your IDE harddisk (YUK IDE Troubles all the way)..... Anayway, you should, try switching that particallar harddisk type to LBA.. ( or turn it off). I had the same problem with my old P60, I could'nt install any of the Linux distributions (and I have a whole lot of them). Every time I saw LIL and the system hung. I at first solved the problem by making a DOS track and running LOADLIN with the parameters to my kernel. Afterwards, I found out that my BIOS wasn't really capable of running 1.2GB disk without LBA.
